Overview
This 60-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 56th Annual Conference addresses the relationship between methamphetamine use and sexual expression in LGBTQ+ communities, focusing on creating supportive, nonjudgmental spaces, and implementing harm-reduction strategies to promote health and recovery.
This session aims to explore address the disproportionate impact of methamphetamine use on LGBTQ+ communities. It will explore the complex social, structural, and psychological factors contributing to substance use in these communities and introduce harm-reduction strategies that incorporate sex-positive and identify affirming group therapy. By engaging with both lived experiences and evidence-informed practices, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how to develop culturally responsive interventions that promote health equity and recovery for LGBTQ+ individuals.
The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.
This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies:Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Interpersonal and Communication Skills.
This session addresses the following IPEC Competencies: Values and Ethics, Interprofessional Communication.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Identify the relationship between methamphetamine use and sexual expression within LGBTQ+ populations, particularly in the context of "chem-sex" behaviors.
- Demonstrate how to create nonjudgmental, supportive environments that foster open discussions on substance use and sexual health within LGBTQ+ communities.
- Explain the role of harm-reduction strategies, including sex-positive and identify-affirming group therapy interventions, in supporting the health and recovery of LGBTQ+ individuals.

Click the button View/Print Certificate to save or print your certificate. You can view/print your certificate at any time by visiting the ASAM eLearning Center, clicking Dashboard, and clicking Transcript/Achievements.

Lucy Ogbu-Nwobodo, MD, MS, MAS is an Assistant Professor at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and serves in a number of leadership roles at UCSF including as: the Medical Director of the UCSF Alliance Health Project, Associate Program Director in the Psychiatry Residency Training Program, Associate Program Director in the Public Psychiatry Fellowship and as the Director of the UCSF School of Medicine’s Post Baccalaureate Program and Office of Outreach.

Kevin Shone is a certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor (CADC-II) and is the Supervising Substance Use Counselor at UCSF Alliance Health Project in San Francisco. He has been providing substance use services with a focus on the LGBTQI community since 2002. He was the sole counselor in the UCLA-ISAP "Getting Off" research study in West Hollywood, which studied the efficacy of both Contingency Management and a manualized protocol (adapted from the Matrix Model) for gay and bisexual stimulant users. As the Supervising Substance Use Counselor at UCSF Alliance Health Project, he oversees the outpatient Harm Reduction SUD program. In his role at Alliance Health Project, he has presented or been co-presenter for several trainings for staff and the community on Motivational Interviewing and facilitates a monthly Motivational Interviewing consult group. Among the other trainings he has presented are Harm Reduction, Crystal Meth (Impact and Treatment), Reducing Stigma in SUD Treatment and Changing Language to Reduce Stigma.

Pierre-Cedric Crouch, PhD, NP

Pierre-Cedric Crouch, PhD, ANP-BC, PMHNP-BC, ACRN, CARN-AP is a Psychiatric-Mental Health and Adult Nurse Practitioner in private practice at Pink Wellness, LLC in Portland, OR. He grew up in New Orleans, LA where he obtained his BSN from LSU Health Science Center. He later moved to San Francisco, CA, earning his MSN, PhD, and Post-Master's certificate from UCSF. His focus is on incorporating mental health and substance use care into Hep C and HIV prevention and treatment. In his career, he helped develop an inpatient addiction medicine consult service, the largest nurse-led PrEP health program, a Hep C treatment program in a syringe access center, and the first PrEP 2-1-1 program in the USA.

Harminder K. Gill, MD, recieved her medical degree at the University of Washington School of Medicine and completed residency through San Mateo County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services residency program. She continued her training in community psychiatry through the public psychiatry fellowship program at the University of California San Francisco.

PAs
ASAM has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1.0 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 1.0 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid until 05/06/2028. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.
Pharmacists
