Overview
This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 56th Annual Conference addresses the challenges faced by individuals with SUD in the criminal justice system, the need for expanded access to care, and effective intervention strategies to support this population.
This interactive workshop will explore strategies that have shown promise in helping patients with SUD manage their disease successfully as they navigate the criminal justice system. Presentation of case studies and successful interventions will be interspersed with small group discussions of real world experiences.
The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.
This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Systems-based Practice.
This session addresses the following IPEC Competencies: Interprofessional Communication, Teams and Teamwork.
Learning Objectives
- Upon completion, participants will be able to describe the scope of challenges facing the patient with SUD across the criminal justice continuum.
- Upon completion, participants will be able to define and describe the current statistical trends and rationale to increase access to care to criminal justice involved patients.
- Upon completion, participant will be able to list the types of interventions effective in supporting this population and define the key components of these interventions.

- Click Complete Post Test to answer multiple choice questions. Participants will have 10 attempts to pass and must answer 4 out of 5 questions correctly.
- Click Complete Evaluation to provide valuable activity feedback. Scroll down on all questions as there may be answer options that expand past the size of the window.
- Click the button Claim Medical Credits in the box titled Claim Credits & Certificate. Choose the type of credit and click submit. Click the button View/Print Certificate to save or print your certificate. You can view/print your certificate at any time by visiting the ASAM eLearning Center, clicking Dashboard, and clicking Transcript/Achievements.
- For Pharmacists ONLY: Complete the task entitled "Enter Pharmacist CPE Monitor Information (Pharmacists Only)". Pharmacists must claim credit and provide their eProfile ID and Birthdate via the Pharmacist CPE Monitor Information survey within 30 days of completing the activity. Josh Hammond MD is the Senior Medical Director for Porch Light Health. He grew up in South Carolina, where he attended the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Hammond completed his residency in Family Medicine at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, CO. He saw how much addiction affects families and communities, including many of his friends and family, and how greater access to treatment is desperately needed. During residency, he volunteered weekly at a high-risk opioid use disorder clinic in Fort Collins, which further inspired him to improve treatment access and education in regard to substance use disorders. He is passionate about expanding access to comprehensive evidence based treatment for substance use disorders. He lives in Fort Collins with his family and enjoys spending his free time in the woods.

Dayna DeHerrera-Smith, MPH is the Director of Community Engagement & Development for Porch Light Health. Her role centers around building and maintaining community partnerships, including the oversight of grant funding and programming. Dayna has a Master’s of Public Health from the Colorado School of Public Health and has enjoyed bringing a public health perspective to accessible substance use disorder treatment. She is passionate about access to care and harm reduction practices, especially for BIPOC, justice-involved individuals, and rural communities.

I am Karissa Gayosso AGACNP-BC, Education Medical Lead for Porch Light Health. I have been working in addiction medicine for 4.5 years serving the rural, surburban, and urban areas of Colorado. I have been treating patients in an intensive residential treatment program in rural northeastern Colorado for almost four years. The goal is to meet patients where they are at in their journey with addiction and to provide high access, low barrier care to individuals who would not otherwise have access to care.

In support of improving patient care, the American Society of Addiction Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
Physicians
The American Society of Addiction Medicine designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Nurses
This activity awards 1.25 Nursing contact hours.
PAs
ASAM has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1.25 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 1.25 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid until 05/06/2028. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.
Pharmacists
