Overview

This 60-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 57th Annual Conference addresses alcohol use disorder treatment in patients with liver disease, including pharmacotherapy safety, transplant considerations, and integrated care models.

This session provides practical, evidence-based guidance for treating Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) in patients with liver disease across inpatient, outpatient, and transplant settings. Participants will gain tools to navigate treatment decisions, improve clinical outcomes, and support equitable care.

The target audience for this Introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, and students.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Systems-based Practice.

This session addresses the following IPEC Competencies: Values and Ethics, Roles and Responsibilities.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

1. Evaluate the evidence and safety data for FDA-approved and off-label AUD pharmacotherapies in patients with liver disease, identifying indications and contraindications.
2. Develop safe and effective, evidence-based treatment plans for AUD in patients pre- and post-liver transplant.
3. Integrate psychosocial, mutual-support, and integrated care models into the management of AUD for patients with hepatic dysfunction.
