Overview
This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 55th Annual Conference addresses how to identify and treat xylazine-associated wounds with patient-centered strategies.
Xylazine, popularly known as "Tranq", has been identified as an "emerging threat" to the US population. A multi-specialty and interdisciplinary group of Addiction physicians and a pharmacist who practice in Philadelphia, where xylazine is currently found in > 90% of the opioid supply, will present best-practices in treating patients using xylazine. This didactic case-based session will address national xylazine trends, drug properties, overdose and withdrawal management, wound care, pain management, and harm reduction with a focus on patient-centered care.
The target audience for this Introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Describe how xylazine's unique pharmacology leads to clinical manifestations of intoxication, overdose, and withdrawal
- Recognize and manage xylazine withdrawal with a variety of pharmacological agents
- Identify and treat xylazine-associated wounds with patient-centered strategies

Bridget Durkin, MD, MBE
Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine

Bridget R. Durkin, MD, MBE is trained in addiction medicine and bioethics, and is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine in Palliative Care at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA.
There, she serves on the Opioid Use Disorder Workgroup of the Penn Medicine Opioid Task Force. She is also a member of the multidisciplinary hospital Ethics Committee. She completed a fellowship in Addiction Medicine at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey. She trained in Internal Medicine and Palliative Care at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where she also obtained a master’s degree in Bioethics. Her interests include interdisciplinary medical education on clinical ethics, substance use disorders, and palliative care. She is passionate about supporting vulnerable patients, especially those living with substance use disorders and comorbid serious illness.
Sam Huo, MD, MPH, MS

Penn Medicine
Sam Huo, MD, MPH, MS is an emergency and addiction medicine physician and an Assistant Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine. She completed her residency in emergency medicine at Temple University Hospital and a fellowship in addiction medicine at Cooper University Hospital. She is passionate about harnessing the potential for the ED and hospital settings to be a point of entry to other settings of care, particularly for those who struggle with substance use disorders. Her approach to medicine is grounded in the philosophy of harm reduction and the belief that people who use drugs deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. She currently practices emergency medicine and addiction medicine at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania - Cedar Avenue. She serves as the medical director of the Addiction Consult Team at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. In her free time she enjoys rock climbing, playing tennis, and snuggling with her cats.
Nia Bhadra-Heintz, MD, MS

Nia Bhadra-Heintz, MD, MS is an obstetrician and gynecologist with a background in cross-cultural psychology who completed medical school at the Boston University School of Medicine, OB/GYN residency at the University of Pennsylvania, and fellowship in addiction medicine at The Ohio State University. She is a Assistant Professor in the OB/GYN generalist division and co-director of the Perinatal Resources for Opioid Use Disorder in Penn Family Care. Her research interests include treatment of substance use disorders in peripartum women, stigma related to addiction medicine treatment, intimate partner violence, and disparities within women’s health.
Emily Casey, PharmD
Clinical Pharmacy Specialist, Pain Management, Substance Use

Emily Casey, PharmD is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Pain Management and Substance Use Disorders at Penn Medicine. She graduated from the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy and completed residency at Penn Medicine, specializing in Pain Management and Palliative Care. She is an active member of the Society of Pain Management and Palliative Care Pharmacists and servis as the Residency Program Coordinatory for the Pain Management Pharmacy Residency at Penn Medicine. Dr. Casey enjoys caring for patient with complex pain and substance use disorders.
