Overview

This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 55th Annual Conference addresses how to adjust medications for opioid use disorder to optimize their pain management potential.

With an increasing number of patients on medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) it's important for providers to understand how to treat acute pain in hospitalized patients. This introductory-level didactic section will highlight the basics of acute pain management in patients who are on buprenorphine, methadone, or extended release naltrexone for OUD. We will cover the basics of how to optimize MOUDs for pain management, when to add additional analgesics, and how to handle MOUDs in the perioperative setting.

The target audience for this Introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Upon completion, participant will be able to define how to adjust medications for opioid use disorder to optimize their pain management potential.
  2. Upon completion, participant will be able to define what potential additional opioid and non-opioid analgesics can be added on to MOUDs to optimize acute pain
  3. Upon completion, participant will be able to describe the consensus around management of MOUDs in the perioperative setting.

Steven Tate, MD, MSc

Clinical Assistant Professor

Stanford University School of Medicine

Dr. Steven Tate serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor specializing in addiction medicine within the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago and completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Pennsylvania. He then successfully completed a fellowship in addiction medicine at Stanford. With a Master's in medical statistics from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Dr. Tate brings a rigorous and evidence-based approach to his work.

Dr. Tate sees patients in the Stanford Dual Diagnosis Clinic, providing comprehensive care for individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. He also attends on the inpatient addiction medicine consult service, where he offers guidance to healthcare professionals on complex addiction-related cases. Driven by his dedication to improving care for patients with substance use disorders, he focuses his work on educating future addiction professionals and translating evidence into practice.

Bridget Durkin, MD, MBE

Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine

Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania

Bridget R. Durkin, MD, MBE is trained in addiction medicine and bioethics, and is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine in Palliative Care at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA.

There, she serves on the Opioid Use Disorder Workgroup of the Penn Medicine Opioid Task Force. She is also a member of the multidisciplinary hospital Ethics Committee. She completed a fellowship in Addiction Medicine at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey. She trained in Internal Medicine and Palliative Care at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where she also obtained a master’s degree in Bioethics. Her interests include interdisciplinary medical education on clinical ethics, substance use disorders, and palliative care. She is passionate about supporting vulnerable patients, especially those living with substance use disorders and comorbid serious illness.

Emily Casey, PharmD

Clinical Pharmacy Specialist, Pain Management, Substance Use

Emily Casey, PharmD is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Pain Management and Substance Use Disorders at Penn Medicine. She graduated from the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy and completed residency at Penn Medicine, specializing in Pain Management and Palliative Care. She is an active member of the Society of Pain Management and Palliative Care Pharmacists and servis as the Residency Program Coordinatory for the Pain Management Pharmacy Residency at Penn Medicine. Dr. Casey enjoys caring for patient with complex pain and substance use disorders.

Erik Saka, MD, MBE

Assistant Professor

Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania

Dr. Erik Saka, MD, MBE is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He currently works as both an anesthesiologist and intensivist at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and Pennsylvania Hospital. He is interested in the overlap between addiction and transitions of care between perioperative medicine and critical care.
