Overview

This 30-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 57th Annual Conference addresses incorporating evidence-based substance use disorder training in medical schools, including stigma reduction strategies and curriculum implementation frameworks.

Want to transform how future doctors treat addiction? This dynamic, hands-on workshop will show you how two medical schools are leading the charge to embed stigma-reducing, evidence-based SUD education into the core of medical training. Learn how to implement the MI CARES modular curriculum, engage stakeholders, and walk away with a process map to launch change at your own institution.

The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, and students.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Professionalism, Systems-based Practice.

This session addresses the following IPEC Competencies: Values and Ethics.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Analyze the impact of stigma on clinical care for patients with substance use disorders and identify strategies to address it through early medical education.
  2. Demonstrate how to implement a modular, evidence-based SUD curriculum, such as MI CARES, across varied academic settings using real-world examples from two institutions.
  3. Create a customized process map for curriculum adoption at participants' home institutions, incorporating stakeholder engagement, curriculum design, and sustainability planning.

Rohit is interested in addressing health equity and accessibility in substance use disorders via research and advocacy through interdisciplinary efforts. Rohit's topics of interest include novel opioid use disorder treatments, HIV/HCV tranmission in patients with SUDs, and health outcomes and cost-effectiveness research.

Daryn Papenfuse, MPH, is the Program Manager supporting the Provider Clinical Support Systems grant implementation at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, where he leads statewide efforts to integrate evidence‑based SUD education into medical training. His career spans Michigan’s Section 1003 SUD capacity assessment and leadership of the State Opioid Response (SOR) grants, giving him a rare systems‑level perspective on how public health priorities translate into clinical workforce preparation. He holds a BS in Community Health Education (2016) and an MPH in Public Health (2018) from Central Michigan University, where he has served on the Public Health Program Advisory Board since its founding. He enjoys exploring the great state of Michigan with his wife, Miranda, and is an avid fly fisherman.

Dr. Li Li is a board-certified general psychiatrist and addiction medicine specialist, and Vivian Conaster-Turner endowed Professor, in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is also the Director for Addiction Research and Clinical Services. In the past 15 years, Dr. Li has focused her career on research, patient care, education, training, programs development, and advocacy in the field of addiction and mental health. She has a well-established record in conducting clinical trials and implementation study, and has served and currently serves as the PI and Co-I on studies funded by NIDA, NIDDK, SAMHSA, NARSAD, and Foundation of Opioid Response Efforts. She has published about 95 peer-reviewed articles and has been recognized nationally and internationally for these topics.

Cara Poland, MD, MEd, FACP, DFASAM

Dr. Cara Poland is a recognized expert in addiction medicine. She is a faculty member at Michigan State University. She earned her medical degree from Wayne State University. She was trained in internal medicine at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and in addiction medicine at Boston Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. She received her master’s degree in education from Boston University. She has an interest in educating healthcare providers and providers-in-training to improve care for patients with substance use disorders, particularly during pregnancy and early parenting.


In 2018, board-certified Addiction Medicine Doctor Cara Poland identified the need to strengthen our country’s Addiction Medicine workforce. Led by Dr. Poland, MI CARES trains physician-level addiction specialists in Michigan and across the country. Over 2,000 physicians in all 50 states, Washington DC, and Puerto Rico are currently on the pathway to becoming board-certified in Addiction Medicine. The program also teaches physicians-in-training, resident physicians, social work students, social work practitioners, APRNs, and PAs. Her didactic program involves purposeful education to train healthcare providers to treat persons with SUDs in a kind, compassionate, destigmatized way. Dr. Poland has a special interest in treating pregnant people and their families living with a substance use disorder.

A passionate and highly sought-after public speaker and educator, Dr. Poland regularly appears in the media and at community events. She has directly influenced policies and procedures around the treatment of people with SUDs. Her persistent advocacy has helped to advance evidence-based treatment, as evidenced by her role as the Public Policy Chair for the American Society of Addiction Medicine. Dr. Poland is the chair of the Michigan Opioid Advisory Commission, established as the designated state entity to advise the Michigan legislature on the use of opioid settlement funds.

Madison Walsh is a doctoral student in epidemiology at Michigan State University with a focus on substance use, alcohol initiation, and social contexts of use. Her work leverages large national datasets and applied biostatistical methods to examine patterns of alcohol and drug use and inform prevention and education efforts. She also has experience developing and evaluating campus-based substance use education and harm-reduction programming. Her interests include translating epidemiologic research into practical interventions for young adults and community settings.
