Overview

This 1-hour on-demand session from ASAM Virtual 2021 addresses the needed interventions as the social and health repercussions of stigma, racial justice, trauma and substance use disorder grow heavier.

As the social and health repercussions of stigma, racial justice, trauma and substance use disorder grow heavier, needed interventions such as education, compassionate safe guidelines to understand a patient's life experiences in order to deliver effective trauma-informed caring is gaining in priority for programming, policy and research. The workshop will discuss how stigma-free, compassionate, race-equitable and trauma-informed care has the potential to improve “no wrong door” whole person caring, social justice, treatment adherence, health outcomes, provider and staff wellness. A focus on anti-racism as an active process of identifying and eliminating racism by changing systems, organizational structures, policies and practices and attitudes will be explored.

The target audience for this introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care, Practice-Based Improvement, Interpersonal Skills.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify current national data, trends and significant gaps related to stigma and barriers to access to care for pregnant and parenting women with substance use disorder
  2. Gain knowledge of stigmatization of people with substance use disorders and how it may be even more problematic in the current COVID-19 crisis
  3. Appreciate trauma-informed care framework and understand importance of compassionate, non-judgmental patient-centered and trauma-informed practices for vulnerable people with SUD

  2. Click "Complete Post Test" to answer quiz questions. You will have 10 attempts and must get at least 2 out of 3 questions correct. After completing the quiz, return to the Contents tab. 
  3. Click "Complete Evaluation" to answer evaluation questions. Scroll down on all questions, there are answers that expand past the size of the window. 
  4. Click the button “Claim Credits” in the box titled “Claim Credits & Certificate." Choose the type of credit and click submit. Click the button “View/Print Certificate” to save or print your certificate. If you ever lose your certificate, you can come back to the ASAM e-Learning Center and view it on your transcript (found in the Dashboard).

Vania Rudolf

MD, MPH, DFASAM

Vania Rudolf, MD, MPH, DFASAM is a family and addiction medicine physician who is providing care to pregnant and parenting women with substance use disorder. She has a background in family medicine with OB and has completed Fellowships in Integrative Medicine, Addiction Medicine and High Risk Obstetrics at Swedish Medical Center. She has earned public health training at the UW. Dr. Rudolf continues to be a compassionate advocate for improving kind non-judgmental services and removing barriers to care. Providing compassionate trauma-responsive care to vulnerable women, babies and families is the primary focus of her practice in addition to clinical research related to clinical outcomes for substance use disorder, transition to MAT and prescribing policies to optimize safe and adequate postpartum analgesia management. She is the Medical Director for Addiction Recovery Services at Swedish Medical Center, an assistant professor at University of Washington, Seattle, WA and the Chair for the National Womens' Addiction Group related to the American Society of Addiction Medicine. She serves on the maternal mortality review board for the state of Washington and has many years as a practicing clinician.

Hendree E. Jones

PhD

Hendree Jones, PhD is an internationally recognized expert in the development and examination of both behavioral and pharmacologic treatments for pregnant women and their children in risky life situations. She has received continuous National Institutes of Health funding since 1994 and has written more than 200 publications. Dr. Jones has also authored two books, one on treating patients for substance use disorders and the other on comprehensive care for women who are pregnant and have substance use disorders. She also has written multiple textbook chapters on the topic of pregnancy and addiction. Dr. Jones has co-authored multiple national and international guidelines on the topic of caring for pregnant and post-pregnant people with substance use disorders and their children including those published by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the American Society for Addiction Medicine. She also co-authored both the women’s and children’s section of the United Nations (UN)’ International Standards for the Treatment of Drug Use Disorders and the UN guidelines on prevention and treatment for girls and women. While winning multiple awards, most recently in 2020 Dr. Jones won the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) R. Brinkley Smithers and Distinguished Scientist Award. She is a consultant for the UN and the WHO and is a member of the NIH’s HEAL multidisciplinary working group. Dr. Jones leads or is involved in projects around the world focused on improving the lives of children, women, and families.
