Patient-Centered Care for Women with Substance Use Disorders

Created January 2025
Online Course

Overview

This two-hour online course equips healthcare professionals with the essential knowledge, skills, and tools to effectively identify and treat women with substance use disorders (SUDs). Designed for primary care providers and addiction medicine specialists, the course offers a comprehensive understanding of gender-specific factors that influence the development, progression, and treatment of SUDs in women. Learners will develop competence in implementing Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) practices tailored specifically for women. This includes conducting gender-sensitive screenings, delivering brief interventions that address the unique challenges women face, and exploring appropriate treatment and referral options. The course emphasizes enhancing patient safety and improving outcomes by addressing misconceptions and optimizing care to foster more inclusive, equitable treatment environments. Practical strategies will be provided to overcome barriers and improve treatment engagement, ultimately leading to better health outcomes for women with SUDs.

The target audience includes a broad range of primary care providers, such as those in general practice, family medicine, internal medicine, and obstetrics and gynecology. Additionally, the course is relevant for addiction medicine specialists, who bring focused expertise in managing substance use disorders (SUDs). Educating primary care providers is particularly important because they often serve as the first point of contact for women with SUDs. By equipping these healthcare professionals with the necessary knowledge, skills, and tools, the course will ensure they are prepared to recognize, support, and effectively treat women struggling with SUDs, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes and more comprehensive care.

The ACGME Competencies include: Patient Care and Procedural Skills and Medical Knowledge.
