Overview
This one-hour, online intermediate-level course, developed in collaboration with the Opioid Response Network (ORN), follows a longitudinal clinical case exploring an individual’s experience with co-occurring opioid and stimulant use disorders and treatment across key transition points before, during, and after incarceration. Through a real-world case study, learners will explore challenges related to stigma, polysubstance use, interprofessional collaboration, confidentiality, treatment decision-making, and family and community support.
The target audience for this intermediate-level course includes: Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Associates, Nurses, Pharmacy and Pharmacy Technicians, Social Workers, and other health care professionals with experience in addiction medicine.
This activity addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Interprofessional Communication, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, and Systems-based Practices
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
Employ strategies to overcome barriers in providing substance use disorder treatment across transition points before, during, and after incarceration.
Recognize and address stigma in a variety of settings to improve care for individuals with substance use disorder.
Evaluate treatment needs and develop care plans to provide continuity of care for individuals with substance use disorder throughout the stages of incarceration.

The Opioid Response Network (ORN) is a program funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). It is led by the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) in collaboration with a large national coalition. This coalition forms the Opioid Response Network to provide free training and education to address opioid, stimulant and all substance use disorders.

Alysse Wurcel, MD, MS
Dr. Alysse G. Wurcel is an Associate Professor at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and a clinician investigator in the Section of General Internal Medicine. She also provides patient care in the Section of Infectious Diseases at Boston Medical Center. Dr. Wurcel earned her medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, completed her internal medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, and subsequently completed fellowship training in infectious diseases. A nationally recognized clinician investigator, she has more than 20 years of expertise in infectious diseases and extensive experience caring for people with HIV, people who are incarcerated, and people who use drugs.
Dr. Wurcel’s research focuses on health equity and systems-based approaches to improving healthcare, including infectious disease care in correctional settings. She has published more than 115 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has provided clinical care in several Massachusetts county jails. She also serves as Chair of the Academic Consortium for Criminal Justice Health, an organization focused on advancing health equity for people impacted by the criminal-legal system.

Erica Heiman, MD, MS, FACP
Dr. Erica Heiman is an internal medicine specialist who also focuses on addiction medicine. She addresses a wide range of conditions and helps individuals manage substance use challenges with compassionate, patient-centered strategies. Dr. Heiman is passionate about ensuring high-quality care, both for her own patients and through systems-level advocacy.
As an assistant professor of internal medicine at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Heiman’s research examines disparities in care, particularly as they affect individuals who use substances. She works to improve access to support services and reduce barriers to treatment.
Dr. Heiman received her medical training from the University of California, San Francisco, completed her residency in internal medicine at the University of California, Davis, and pursued a fellowship in addiction medicine at Yale School of Medicine.
In support of improving patient care, the American Society of Addiction Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
