Overview

This 90-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 57th Annual Conference addresses multisociety consensus guidelines for managing opioid-related complications in chronic pain, including OUD, physiologic dependence, and functional impairment.

Most medical practitioners encounter patients with chronic pain who have experienced opioid-related challenges. The newly published ASRA Consensus Guideline outlines best practices for pain specialists in managing these patients. Whether you work in a pain specialty setting, or in primary care, physiatry, sports medicine, neurology, rheumatology, or psychiatry, the guideline's key statements and recommendations are pertinent to your practice. The session is structured around a longitudinal, interactive clinical case study, with guideline contents embedded throughout the discussion of the case.

The target audience for this Advanced level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, and students.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Practice-based Learning and Improvement.

This session addresses the following IPEC Competencies: Communication, Teams and Teamwork.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

1. Differentiate between OUD, CPOD, and physiologic dependence, and outline diagnostic and therapeutic implications in the chronic pain setting.
2. Design treatment plans incorporating buprenorphine or other MOUD for patients with coexisting pain and OUD, including initiation, maintenance, and perioperative considerations
3. Interpret and respond to urine drug screen findings and other objective screening for aberrant behaviors in the context of prescribed opioids or MOUD, using a patient-centered, evidence-based framework.
