Overview

This 1-hour on-demand session from ASAM Virtual 2021 addresses the role trauma plays in development of addictions and exploring intergenerational trauma.

Ongoing research has documented the role that trauma plays in the development of addictions. Intergenerational trauma is also being explored in families of survivors of the Holocaust, African-Americans post-slavery and in Native Americans. The passage of trauma from one generation to several generations below them has been documented in animal and human research with its etiology being related to epigenetic changes in DNA expression as a result of the original trauma. An understanding the the impact of trauma, including attachment insecurity on the brain provides a more comprehensive understanding of addictions and other related disorders and fully seats trauma - acute, chronic and intergenerational or historical - as being an important underlying etiologic factors in addictions.

The target audience for this intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

1. Describe how attachment styles can impact transgenerational transmission of trauma
2. Discuss the ways in which trauma impacts the brain of those with original trauma
3. Describe how trauma increases the risk for the development of substance use disorders and other mental health disorders

Course Instructions

1. Click the Contents tab and select "View On-Demand Recording".  After viewing the entire video, return to the Contents tab.
2. Click "Complete Post Test" to answer quiz questions. You will have 10 attempts and must get at least 2 out of 3 questions correct. After completing the quiz, return to the Contents tab. 
3. Click Complete Evaluation to answer evaluation questions. Scroll down on all questions, there are answers that expand past the size of the window. Submit the evaluation (the next box should activate, and the evaluation box should turn green with a white check mark).
4. Click the button “Claim Credits” in the box titled “Claim Credits & Certificate." Choose the type of credit and click submit. Click the button “View/Print Certificate” to save or print your certificate. If you ever lose your certificate, you can come back to the ASAM e-Learning Center and view it on your transcript (found in the Dashboard).
