Integrating Alcohol Withdrawal Management into Primary Care Settings

Overview

This 1-hour on-demand session from ASAM Virtual 2021 addresses the lack of outpatient detoxification options for alcohol-dependent patients who do not require monitored withdrawal management and reviews the results of a pilot project created to make outpatient management standardized, evidence-based, and efficient for busy providers.

Most alcohol-dependent individuals do not require monitored withdrawal management, yet lack of outpatient detoxification options can be a barrier to sobriety and maintenance therapies. This workshop reviews the results of a QI project at several urban underserved clinics in Denver, using case-based presentations to review evidence behind risk stratification, dosing protocols, and follow-up algorithms implemented to make outpatient management standardized, evidence-based, and efficient for busy providers. We review results from the pilot, including patient and provider outcomes.

Teaching Methods Description: We will use case-based presentations and quiz questions for interactive learning, sharing protocols and algorithms with attendees.

Educational Purpose: Primary care must help address the huge gap in access to outpatient withdrawal management, leading to greater access to medications to support ongoing sobriety.

The target audience for this intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care, Systems Based Practice.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

1. Utilize screening tools to identify patients appropriate for outpatient alcohol withdrawal management
2. Implement tools, including protocols, order sets, standard documentation, home monitoring instructions, and follow up, to assist busy primary care providers to safely and efficiently offer withdrawal management for patients
3. Define metrics of success for outpatient withdrawal management, including completed withdrawal episodes, complications, and successful transitions to medications for sobriety maintenance

2. Click "Complete Post Test" to answer quiz questions. You will have 10 attempts and must get at least 2 out of 3 questions correct. After completing the quiz, return to the Contents tab. 
3. Click "Complete Evaluation" to answer evaluation questions. Scroll down on all questions, there are answers that expand past the size of the window. 
4. Click the button “Claim Credits” in the box titled “Claim Credits & Certificate." Choose the type of credit and click submit. Click the button “View/Print Certificate” to save or print your certificate. If you ever lose your certificate, you can come back to the ASAM e-Learning Center and view it on your transcript (found in the Dashboard).
