Overview

This 60-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 57th Annual Conference addresses incorporating artificial intelligence into addiction research workflows, covering practical skills, search optimization, and ethical considerations.

This workshop will provide attendees with a basic understanding of the benefits and limitations of artificial intelligence (AI) in research. The workshop will include didactics, live demonstrations of AI, and a hands-on component. Attendees will gain skills to incorporate AI into their research workflow, including using AI to assist with literature reviews, develop grant outlines, and provide mock peer review, and discuss other innovative ways to incorporate AI into research in addiction medicine.

The target audience for this Introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, and students.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Practice-based Learning and Improvement.

This session addresses the following IPEC Competencies: Values and Ethics.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the limitations and risks of using artificial intelligence in addiction research
  2. Construct optimized search queries with iterative improvements
  3. Incorporate basic skills in using artificial intelligence to improve research in addiction medicine

Cara Borelli, DO is a core faculty member in addiction medicine at Yale University School of Medicine, and her clinical work is on the inpatient Yale Addiction Medicine Consult Service (YAMCS). In this role, she works on an interdisciplinary team and precepts trainees who span the spectrum of medical training, including first-year medical students, medical students on the Yale Collaborative Behavioral Health and Addiction Medicine Program (CHAMP) pathway, nurse practitioner and physician assistant students, internal medicine, psychiatry, and emergency medicine residents, consult-liaison psychiatry fellows, addiction psychiatry fellows, and addiction medicine fellows. Her residency training was in emergency medicine at UT Health San Antonio, and she completed a fellowship in addiction medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, New York. She is the PI for a SAMHSA grant on education in addiction medicine. She has co-hosted podcasts for multiple channels including JAMA, ACEP Now, and REBEL EM on addiction medicine treatment topics. She is the co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Child and Adolescent Substance Use.

Alyssa is a current Addiction Medicine Fellow at Yale New Haven Hosptial. She graduated from family medicine residency at Community Hospital East and attended medical school at Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. Her interests include harm reduction, substance use disorders in perinatal populations, integrative medicine, and improving access to addiction care. Upon graduating from fellowship, she will be pursuing a research year at Yale University.

University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford

Molly Perri, MD is an Assistant Professor and serves as the Program Director for the Addiction Medicine Fellowship at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford. Dr. Perri is board certified in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine. She delivers integrated primary care and addiction treatment at an FQHC and through street medicine in Rockford, Illinois. She also serves as the Medical Director for the Addiction Consult Service at UW Health SwedishAmerican Hospital. She has a specific research and clinical interest in treating adolescent substance use disorders. She attended medical school at the University of Illinois Chicago and completed Med-Peds residency at the University of Chicago where she served as Chief Resident. She completed her fellowship training in Addiction Medicine at Yale University. Dr. Perri has a Master’s in the Art of Teaching and is passionate about medical education. She teaches about addiction medicine at the medical school, residency, and fellowship level.

Lilian Denzler, PhD student in Computational Biology at University College London (UCL), is currently conducting research at Yale University. Her research focuses on developing AI methods for drug development that incorporate protein language models and graph-based models. She also benchmarks existing computational pipelines and assesses the reliability of AI-driven predictions.
