Overview
This 60-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 57th Annual Conference addresses implementing hospital and emergency department SUD care, translating ASAM guidance into practical interprofessional implementation strategies.
Hospitals and emergency departments represent critical opportunities to address substance use disorders. This interactive workshop will share practical models, strategies, and tools from ASAM's new implementation guide to support evidence-based care in hospital/ED settings. Participants will engage in case-based learning and small group discussions to identify solutions for overcoming barriers such as stigma, financing, and workforce limitations.
The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, and students.
This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Systems-based Practice.
This session addresses the following IPEC Competencies:Roles and Responsibilities, Teams and Teamwork.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Describe ASAM's core competencies for hospital and ED-based SUD care.
- Analyze barriers and facilitators to implementing SUD care in acute settings.
- Design an interprofessional implementation strategy for hospital-based SUD services.

Sarah Wakeman
MD, FASAM
Sarah E. Wakeman, MD is the Medical Director for the Mass General Hospital Substance Use Disorder Initiative, program director of the Mass General Addiction Medicine fellowship, and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. She is also the Medical Director of the Mass General Hospital Addiction Consult Team, co-chair of the Mass General Opioid Task Force, clinical co-lead of the Partners Healthcare Substance Use Disorder Initiative, and co-chair of the Partners Healthcare Opioid Steering Committee. She is the Chief Medical Officer of RIZE Massachusetts, a state-wide, private sector initiative created to build a $50 million fund to implement and evaluate innovative interventions to address the opioid overdose crisis.
She received her A.B. from Brown University and her M.D. from Brown Medical School. She completed residency training in internal medicine and served as Chief Medical Resident at Mass General Hospital. She is a diplomate and fellow of the American Board of Addiction Medicine and board certified in Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. She is chair of the policy committee for the Massachusetts Society of Addiction Medicine. She served on Massachusetts' Governor Baker’s Opioid Addiction Working Group. Nationally, she served as chair of the American Society of Addiction Medicine Drug Court Task Force and serves on their Ethics Committee.
Clinically she provides specialty addiction and general medical care in the inpatient and outpatient setting at Mass General Hospital and the Mass General Charlestown Health Center. Her research interests include evaluating models for integrated substance use disorder treatment in general medical settings, low threshold treatment models, recovery coaching, physician attitudes and practice related to substance use disorder, and screening for substance use in primary care.

Honora Englander
MD
Dr. Honora Englander is an Associate Professor of Medicine at in the Division of Hospital Medicine. She completed her BA in Biology at Williams College and her medical degree at University of Massachusetts Medical School. She completed her internship and residency at OHSU in 2006, and joined the faculty at OHSU in 2007. Dr Englander is the co-founder and Director of the nationally recognized Care Transitions Innovation – or C-TRAIN –a hospital-to-home improvement program for uninsured and publicly insured adults at OHSU and that she has spread to three area hospitals through a $17.3M grant from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovations. Her work leading C-TRAIN served as a springboard for healthcare transformation, and led to the development of the Improving Addiction Care Team (IMPACT) at OHSU. IMPACT includes an inpatient addiction medicine consult service and rapid-access pathways to community addiction care. Dr Englander has published her work in JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine, Journal of Hospital Medicine, and Journal of General Internal Medicine. She sees patients and teaches on the OHSU Medicine wards and at Central City Concern's Old Town Clinic. She is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine.
Itai Danovitch
MD, MBA, FAPA, DFASAM
Itai Danovitch, MD, MBA, FAPA, DFASAM is the Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He earned his bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley, and his medical doctorate from UCLA. He completed psychiatry residency at Columbia, an addiction psychiatry fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and a Master of Business Administration at the UCLA Anderson School of Management. Prior to his current role, he served as Director of Addiction Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship at Cedars-Sinai. His current research is funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). He is the author of over 60 articles and chapters, and co-editor of two books: Addiction—Psychiatric Clinics of North America, and The Assessment and Treatment of Addiction—Best Practices and New Frontiers.
Dr. Danovitch currently served as Director At Large on the ASAM Board of Directors, and is now serving as Region II Director. In addition, he serves on the Conference Planning Committee and Criteria Strategy Committee. He is a past President of the California Society of Addiction Medicine, where he served on numerous committees over the years, including the Board of Directors, Public Policy, Communications, Education, and Integration and Access to Systems of Care. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. In 2016, he was appointed by the Governor of California to serve as a Commissioner on the State Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and three kids.
