Overview

This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 55th Annual Conference addresses the fundamentals of PrEP and the unique challenges of PrEP among PWIDs.

Join our session on "Bridging the Gap: PrEP for People Who Use Drugs (PWUD)" to address a critical issue in HIV prevention. In 2020, PWUD accounted for 7% of new HIV cases in the United States. Despite the proven efficacy of PrEP, only a fraction of people are on the medication. This session will provide an in-depth understanding of PrEP fundamentals, unique challenges among PWUD, and equip participants with the skills to facilitate conversations about PrEP.

The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

This session addresses the following ICPE Competencies:Values and Ethics, Roles and Responsibilities

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Understand the importance of PrEP for people who use drugs
  2. Identify at least two barriers to PrEP for people who use drugs
  3. Apply at least one practical strategy to facilitate the PrEP conversation with their patients

Kento Sonoda

Dr. Kento Sonoda is a fellow physician in University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Addiction Medicine Fellowship. He completed the UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine Residency, and also earned HIV Specialist credential (AAHIVS) in 2021. He is particularly interested in PrEP, PEP, HIV care, STDs for individuals with substance use disorder.

Dr. Tani is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Family Medicine and Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Rush University, as well as core faculty for the Rush Addiction Medicine Fellowship. He is the Assistant Service Chief of Addiction Medicine Consult Service at PCC Community Wellness Center, a federally qualified health center that serves the west side of Chicago. Dr. Tani also sees patients in his family practice clinic, Howard Brown Health, an FQHC on Chicago’s north side where he also provides gender affirming care and HIV treatment.

Dr. Tani’s scholarly and clinical work has focused on advancing low barrier substance use disorder treatment in medically underserved populations, and integrating addiction treatment with primary care in safety net settings. He has taught in local, regional and national settings and enjoys working with interprofessional teams to promote best practices for substance use disorder treatment.

In support of improving patient care, the American Society of Addiction Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Physicians

The American Society of Addiction Medicine designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This activity awards 1.25 Nursing contact hours.

PAs

ASAM has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 1.25 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid until 05/06/2027.  PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.

Social Workers

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, ASAM is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. Social workers completing this course receive 1.25 general continuing education credits.
