Overview
This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 56th Annual Conference addresses the features of The ASAM 4th Edition Level of Care Assessment Guide, its application in making level-of-care recommendations, and resources for local implementation.
The ASAM Criteria, Fourth Edition Level of Care Assessment Guide is intended to help SUD treatment clinicians implement the ASAM dimensional admission criteria. This session will review lessons learned from developing and piloting the Assessment Guide. It will also provide updates on early implementation to help inform other efforts to implement standardized assessment practices in SUD treatment.
The target audience for this Introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.
This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies:Patient Care and Procedural Skills.
This session addresses the following IPEC Competencies: Interprofessional Communication.
Learning Objectives
- Upon completion, learners will be able to list the features of The ASAM 4th edition Level of Care Assessment Guide.

- Click Complete Evaluation to provide valuable activity feedback. Scroll down on all questions as there may be answer options that expand past the size of the window.
- Click the button Claim Medical Credits in the box titled Claim Credits & Certificate. Choose the type of credit and click submit. Click the button View/Print Certificate to save or print your certificate. You can view/print your certificate at any time by visiting the ASAM eLearning Center, clicking Dashboard, and clicking Transcript/Achievements.
- For Pharmacists ONLY: Complete the task entitled "Enter Pharmacist CPE Monitor Information (Pharmacists Only)". Itai Danovitch
MD, MBA, FAPA, DFASAM
Itai Danovitch, MD, MBA, FAPA, DFASAM is the Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He earned his bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley, and his medical doctorate from UCLA. He completed psychiatry residency at Columbia, an addiction psychiatry fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and a Master of Business Administration at the UCLA Anderson School of Management. Prior to his current role, he served as Director of Addiction Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship at Cedars-Sinai. His current research is funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). He is the author of over 60 articles and chapters, and co-editor of two books: Addiction—Psychiatric Clinics of North America, and The Assessment and Treatment of Addiction—Best Practices and New Frontiers.
Dr. Danovitch currently served as Director At Large on the ASAM Board of Directors, and is now serving as Region II Director. In addition, he serves on the Conference Planning Committee and Criteria Strategy Committee. He is a past President of the California Society of Addiction Medicine, where he served on numerous committees over the years, including the Board of Directors, Public Policy, Communications, Education, and Integration and Access to Systems of Care. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. In 2016, he was appointed by the Governor of California to serve as a Commissioner on the State Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and three kids.

Bio of John Smith Ph.D., LCSW
Dr. John Smith is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW #19868 CA & LCSW #34000248A IN) and is the former Director of Education and Training at Social Model Recovery Systems. He is a Professor Emeritus of Addiction Counseling at Mt. San Antonio College in California and he has been in Private Practice since 2000 specializing in treating Co-Occurring Disorders and Trauma.
He is an ASAM training faculty member and regularly conducts ASAM Criteria and Skill Building courses. He serves as a Subject Matter Expert on several ASAM projects and advisory groups.
He is also the author of “Co-occurring Substance Abuse and Mental Disorders: A Practitioner’s Guide” and he is the “Best-Selling” author of “The Authentic Man: A Guide to Happiness and Purpose”.

Gregory Hobelmann, MD, MPH

Dr. Greg Hobelmann currently serves as a Co CEO of Ashley Addiction Treatment. In this role, he oversees the clinical, medical and nursing staff for both the inpatient and outpatient clinics, in addition to general operations. He previously worked as an interventional pain specialist as well as a staff psychiatrist after completing his psychiatry residency at Johns Hopkins. He completed an anesthesiology residency and pain medicine fellowship at Johns Hopkins in 2006 and has a Master of Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. His treatment interests include substance use disorder and chronic pain.

Anne Lee, MSW, LCSW
Project Director
Anne B. Lee, LCSW, is a Project Director at the UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs (ISAP). She received her MSW at Smith College School for Social Work and a Bachelor of Arts at Wesleyan University. At UCLA ISAP, she serves as study Project Director and therapist for research involving people with co-occurring substance abuse and mental disorders. Ms. Lee is Clinical Content specialist for the California Drug Medi-Cal Organized Delivery System (DMC-ODS) Waiver evaluation. Prior to joining UCLA ISAP, she served at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute as Project Director for The TORDIA project (Treatment of Resistant Depression in Adolescents), a multi-site study of drug and talk therapy treatment regimen for severely depressed adolescents. Before coming to UCLA, she served at Harvard Medical School as Project Director and Clinical Interviewer for The Family Pathways Project, a multigenerational longitudinal study of high-risk parent-child attachment. Prior to her work in research, she was a Social Work Fellow at The Boston Children’s Hospital in the Department of Psychiatry.

Eman Gibson serves as the Chief Clinical Officer of Integrity House, a non-profit organization that provides a full range of addiction treatment & mental health services. Offering 25 programs throughout New Jersey, Integrity House offers a variety of treatment models including a therapeutic community, a CCBHC, harm reduction center, street-based outreach & treatment, corrections-based treatment, and supportive housing. Eman began her career in the behavioral health field in 2010 supporting children & families as a mobile response crisis worker in Passaic County, NJ. Eman joined Integrity House in 2012 where she has served in a variety of direct service,management,& leadership positions including treatment, technology, quality assurance, etc. As the Chief Clinical Officer, Eman is responsible for the success of all treatment programs & ensuring positive client outcomes, strategic efforts,& stakeholder collaboration.Eman led several SAMHSA funded programs including the Medication Assisted Treatment -Prescription Drug & Opioid Addiction (MAT-PDOA) program, and most recently a SAMHSA funded residential program for pregnant & postpartum women at Integrity House. Outside of her work at Integrity, Eman is a surveyor for CARF. Eman is a co-author of the 4th edition ASAM criteria, specifically the residential standards. Eman also serves as Treasurer for the NJ chapter of ASAM (NJSAM) Board of Directors and is an at-large board member with the National Council for Mental Wellbeing.Eman is able to conduct advocacy on a State and National level for individuals with behavioral health needs, and personally impact best practice guidelines. Eman earned her Master in Social Work from Columbia University and her Master of Business Administration from Fitchburg State University. She is a NJ Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC).

ASAM has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1.25 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 1.25 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid until 05/06/2028. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.
Pharmacists
This activity will offer 1.25 pharmacy contact hours (.125 CEUs). Pharmacists will be asked to provide identifying information (e-Profile ID and DOB in MMDD format) in order to receive credit and allow reporting to CPE Monitor. (UAN: JA0000141-0000-25-021-H01)
