Overview

This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 55th Annual Conference addresses the difference between complex reflections, simple reflections, and paraphrases.

The first step in learning motivational interviewing (MI) is develop the "MI spirit" , including a genuine belief in the patients worth, support of their autonomy, and curiosity about the patient's inner experience. Reflective listening is a foundational skill that helps us cultivate the accurate empathy required for MI practice. In this interactive workshop, participants will be introduced to this key MI skill and have the opportunity to practice it in small groups.

The target audience for this Introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the difference between complex reflections, simple reflections, and paraphrases.
  2. State the role of complex reflections in motivational interviewing.
  3. Produce reflective statements that include a hypothesis or a guess about the patient or client's meaning.

Julie Childers

MD

Julie Childers is an addiction medicine and palliative care physician at the University of Pittsburgh, where she developed and now directs the Addiction Medicine Fellowship. She has written and taught nationally in the areas of managing addiction in individuals with serious illnesses, communication, motivational interviewing, and medical ethics. In 2021, she was elected to the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine's Academy of Master Educators.

Caridad Ponce Martinez

MD, FAPA

Dr. Caridad Ponce Martinez is Director of Telepsychiatry and Associate Director of the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship program at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. She holds an academic appointment as Assistant Professor in Psychiatry at the UMass School of Medicine. She is board certified by the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry in General Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry. Dr. Ponce Martinez obtained her undergraduate degree in Psychology at Tufts University and completed medical school at the Escuela Autónoma de Ciencias Médicas de Centro América in Costa Rica. She completed her adult psychiatry residency training at the University of Virginia, where she served as a Chief Resident and had an integral role in the evaluation of the Psychiatry residency program and its academic curriculum, particularly as related to substance use disorders. She then completed fellowship training in Addiction Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine. She joined the Department of Psychiatry at UMass in 2016. Her clinical and research interests include expanding access to treatment for substance use disorders in a variety of clinical settings

Carla Marienfeld

MD, DFAPA, FASAM

Carla Marienfeld, MD, is a board-certified addiction psychiatrist and Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Diego who supports recovery in an evidence based, harm-reduction approach through therapy, motivational interviewing, and medication treatment. Her research involves analysis of electronic medical record data for individuals with substance use disorders. She has authored or co-authored over 35 peer reviewed articles, book chapters, practice guidelines, and invited commentaries, and she edited two books: Motivational Interviewing for Clinical Practice and Absolute Addiction Psychiatry Review: An essential board exam study guide. She has been highly involved in education of colleagues and trainees about addiction psychiatry and effective interventions including buprenorphine treatment and motivational interviewing, and she is the fellowship director for the UCSD Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship. Dr. Marienfeld completed a fellowship in addiction psychiatry and residency training in psychiatry at Yale. During her residency, she was chief resident of psychiatry and founded (and later led) the Yale Global Mental Health Program. She earned a medical degree with honors from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
