Overview
This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 56th Annual Conference addresses challenges in accessing care for adolescents with substance use and mental health conditions, and highlights strategies to expand treatment through family-driven, youth-guided, and systems-oriented approaches.
This workshop will summarize current challenges with accessing care for adolescents with SUD. Strategies for expanding access to treatment for SUD and co-occurring mental health conditions will be discussed along with the proposed framework for the Adolescent and Transition Age Youth Volume of The ASAM Criteria. Topics will include treatment infrastructure, expanding access to withdrawal management services, patient and family engagement and shared decision-making, utilization of a systems of care framework, and tailoring care to developmental age and stage.
The target audience for this Introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

This session addresses the following IPEC Competencies: Roles and Responsibilities, Teams and Teamwork.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Understand ongoing challenges with accessing appropriate care for adolescents with SUD and co-occurring mental health conditions.
- Recognize strategies for expanding access to quality adolescent SUD treatment.
- Understand the importance of family driven, youth guided and systems-oriented care in adolescent SUD and MH treatment.

Lisa Fortuna, MD, MPH
Professor and Chair
University of Caiifornia Riverside
Dr. Lisa Fortuna is Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Neurosciences at the University of California, Riverside, School of Medicine. She is a bilingual and bicultural psychiatrist, child and adolescent psychiatrist, addiction medicine provider, and health services researcher. Her career has been dedicated to improving access to behavioral health services for traditionally underserved communities, including adolescents with substance use disorders.
Dr. Fortuna has authored over 100 publications and has served as a principal investigator for nationally and internationally funded research supported by the NIH, PCORI, and various foundations. Her research includes innovative models for addressing mental health care for PTSD and substance use disorders, as well as digital health interventions for adults, youth, and immigrant families. In 2022, she was awarded the Irving Philips Award for Prevention by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, recognizing her significant lifetime contributions to the prevention of child mental illness. In 2023, she received the APA Agnes Purcell McGavin Award for Prevention, honoring her contributions to the prevention of mental disorders in children and adolescents and her impact on youth well-being. Dr. Fortuna also serves as an expert advisor and editorial team member for the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), contributing to the ASAM Criteria adolescent standards.
Modar Sukkarieh, MD, FAAP
Addiction Medicine and Developmental Pediatrician
Boston Children's Hospital
Dr. Modar "Mo" Sukkarieh completed his General Pediatrics training at White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles in 2010. He then worked as a general inpateint and ouutpatient pediatrician in CA and MA for 6 years before resuming his training through joining the Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics fellowship training at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, with a focus on newborn behavior and attachement in the setting of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. After almost two years of DBP training and 4 years of working in varied Developmental Behavioral pediatrics and pediatrics mental health settings, Dr. Sukkarieh recognized first hand the impacts and increasing rates of substance use disorders amongst youth during the Covid period and decided to further train in the field. This led him to join the Pediatric Addiction Medicine fellowship training program at Boston Children's Hospital in 2022. He then joined their faculty after graduating in 2023 and continues to be part of their team. His clinical interests are: neurobiology of addicion in the developing brain, the intersection of addiction and neurodevelopmental disorders, and newborn-maternal attachement in the setting of substance use disorders. He has ongoing research on the international prevalence and trends of Opioid Overdose cases.
Sara Polley, MD, FAPA, FASAM

Ellie Mental Health
Dr. Sara Polley is triple board-certified in adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, and addiction medicine. She practices in the state of Minnesota and serves as a director for Ellie Mental Health while providing clinic-based psychiatric and addiction treatment services for all ages. She is a medical director for Horowitz Health, an Associate Professor for the University of Minnesota with a special intersest in introducing medical students to the field of addiction medicine, and a pediatric addiction consultant for the Minnesota Psychiatric Assistance Line. She is an appointed member of the Minnesota Cannabis Advisory Council representing the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders as the state refines their policies pertaining to medical and adult recreational use of cannabis products.

In support of improving patient care, the American Society of Addiction Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
Physicians
The American Society of Addiction Medicine designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Nurses
This activity awards 1.25 Nursing contact hours.
PAs
ASAM has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1.25 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 1.25 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid until 05/06/2028. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.
Pharmacists
This activity will offer 1.25 pharmacy contact hours (.125 CEUs). Pharmacists will be asked to provide identifying information (e-Profile ID and DOB in MMDD format) in order to receive credit and allow reporting to CPE Monitor. (UAN: JA0000141-0000-25-021-H01)
