Podcast Series

Overview

This series consists of three 45-minute podcasts designed to empower clinicians to confidently manage opioid analgesics, from patient assessment and therapy initiation to modification, discontinuation, and patient counseling.

The target audience for this Introductory level session includes all medication prescribers and care team members.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, and Medical Knowledge.

  • Podcast 1: The Basics of Pain Management and Assessing Patients in Pain

In this inaugural episode of our limited podcast series on navigating pain management dilemmas and opioid use risks in today's healthcare landscape, Amanda Latimore, PhD, Jarratt Pytell, MD, and Arianna Campbell, MPH, PA-C, introduce Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS). They address misconceptions about pain and opioid risks, discuss safe prescribing strategies aligned with updated CDC guidelines, and emphasize the importance of patient education in preventing addiction and overdose.

  • Podcast 2: Setting Goals for Successful Treatment Outcomes

In the second episode of our pain management series, Amanda Latimore, PhD, talks with Jarratt Pytell, MD, and Arianna Campbell, MPH, PA-C, about comprehensive pain management strategies. They discuss opioid and non-opioid medications, short-acting opioids for acute pain, and nonpharmacologic therapies. Emphasis is placed on aligning treatment with patient goals and on the importance of communication, trust, and respect in patient care. Tune in for essential insights on effective and safe pain management.

  • Podcast 3: Managing Patients in Opioid Analgesics

In the final episode of our pain management series, Amanda Latimore, PhD, discusses opioid therapy with experts Jarratt Pytell, MD, and Arianna Campbell, MPH, PA-C. They cover screening tools like the Opioid Risk Tool and SOAP, patient-risk profiles, and non-opioid alternatives. The episode emphasizes patient education on safe use, risks, and medication storage. Topics include managing acute vs. chronic pain, transitioning opioid therapies, using the PDMP, and the role of naloxone in overdose prevention. The importance of personalized care, regular check-ins, and comprehensive education in managing long-term opioid therapy is highlighted.
