Overview

This 45-minute, on-demand session from the ASAM 2024 Review Course provides an overview of the epidemiology of cannabis use disorder, the physiologic effects of cannabis, how to identify cannabis use disorder, and available treatment options.

Cannabis is becoming more prevalent as states enact new legislation surrounding legal use. This session starts with a broad overview of the epidemiology of cannabis use disorder and the changes in public perception of cannabis use. Participants will understand the physiologic effects of cannabis and how to identify cannabis use disorder. Presenters will end with a thorough review of the options and challenges for treatment of cannabis use disorder.

The target audience for this introductory and intermediate-level activity includes: Physicians preparing for the ABPM or AOA Board Certification Examination in addiction medicine, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

This activity addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, and Practice-Based Learning.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate practical knowledge on the neurobiology of addiction and articulate its activity in terms useful in a clinical setting.
  2. Describe the effects of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs in both tolerant and non-tolerant individuals.
  3. Describe the process for diagnosing addiction and differentiating the symptoms of addiction from those of other medical or psychiatric disorders.
  4. Explain the various pharmacologic and psychosocial treatments for addictive disorders and describe the factors that should be considered in selecting a treatment modality to match the needs of a specific patient.
  5. Describe the precipitants of relapse and current evidence-based practices to prevent and manage relapse.

Mashal Khan, MD

Attending of Clinical Psychiatry

NewYork Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell

Dr. Mashal Khan is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine-NewYork Presbyterian Hospital. He attended the School of Medicine at Xi'an Jiaotong University and trained at Maimonides Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident. Following his residency training, he completed a Fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He is board certified in General Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Khan works along with the the Liver transplant team and focuses on improving outcomes for individuals with alcohol use disorder and related liver disease.
