Overview

Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Apply key clinical takeaways and strategies for safely tapering benzodiazepines as outlined in the Joint Clinical Practice Guideline on Benzodiazepine Tapering.
- Recognize the importance of conducting risk-benefit assessments to inform tapering strategies, and close monitoring and adjustments based on a patient’s response during taper.
- Understand the unique challenges and risks associated with tapering benzodiazepines in older adults.
- Implement practical, evidence-based strategies for tapering benzodiazepines in primary care settings.
- Apply evidence-based strategies to manage withdrawal symptoms and mitigate risks associated with high-severity benzodiazepine tapers.

Marcia Mecca
MD
Marcia C. Mecca, MD is an Associate Professor in the Clinician Educator-Scholar track at Yale School of Medicine. She serves as the Medical Director of the West Haven VA Geriatric Medicine Consult Service. Her team developed an interprofessional deprescribing clinic and educational intervention called the Initiative to Minimize Pharmaceutical Risk in Older Veterans. She serves on the benzodiazepine deprescribing guideline committee and the Patient Priorities Care education team. Her scholarly interest is in complex clinical decision making, deprescribing, and the operationalization of What Matters Most to older adults in clinical care.
