Overview

This 60-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 57th Annual Conference addresses behavior change tools for prescribers treating alcohol use disorder, including safety planning, urge surfing, and personalized adherence strategies.

This interactive workshop introduces prescribers to practical, evidence-based strategies that help patients initiate and stay engaged in alcohol use disorder treatment. Through skill demonstrations and role-play using real patient cases, participants will explore tools like Behavior Chain Analysis, the RAC Framework, safety planning, and urge surfing. These simple, actionable templates are designed for prescribers without behavioral health specialization who want effective ways to support recovery and improve treatment outcomes.

The target audience for this Introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, and students.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Interpersonal and Communication Skills.

This session addresses the following IPEC Competencies: Roles and Responsibilities, Communication.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Understand how prescribers can effectively integrate behavior change strategies with pharmacologic treatment for patients with AUD to enhance engagement, support sustained recovery, and improve retention in care.
  2. Utilize Behavior Chain Analysis, RAC Framework, safety and relapse prevention planning, and urge surfing to develop personalized strategies that support behavior change and treatment adherence in patients with AUD.
  3. Demonstrate how to utilize behavior change strategies in the treatment of patients with AUD, including adapting approaches for a variety of care settings.

MD, DFAPA, DFASAM

Carla Marienfeld, MD, is a board-certified addiction psychiatrist and Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Diego who supports recovery in an evidence based, harm-reduction approach through therapy, motivational interviewing, and medication treatment. Her research involves analysis of electronic medical record data for individuals with substance use disorders. She has authored or co-authored over 35 peer reviewed articles, book chapters, practice guidelines, and invited commentaries, and she edited two books: Motivational Interviewing for Clinical Practice and Absolute Addiction Psychiatry Review: An essential board exam study guide. She has been highly involved in education of colleagues and trainees about addiction psychiatry and effective interventions including buprenorphine treatment and motivational interviewing, and she is the fellowship director for the UCSD Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship. Dr. Marienfeld completed a fellowship in addiction psychiatry and residency training in psychiatry at Yale. During her residency, she was chief resident of psychiatry and founded (and later led) the Yale Global Mental Health Program. She earned a medical degree with honors from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

John O’Neil LCSW, LADC Yale New Haven Health John is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor working as the Social Worker for the Yale Addiction Medicine Consult Service where he provides clinical support for patients who suffer from serious medical problems related to substance abuse disorders. He has been at Yale since 2022 and also works as a clinician in group practice where he focuses on clients with AUD. His education includes a Drug and Alcohol Recovery Counselor (DARC) Certificate from Gateway Community College and an MSW from Southern Connecticut State University, as well as a BS in Marketing and MBA from Ball State University. John’s experience in addiction treatment includes work for Aware In Home Addiction Treatment and Residential Treatment Units of Recovery Network of Programs. John also worked extensively in marketing, advertising, and retail photo management. His work in marketing consulting included working closely with Dr. C. Everett Koop on Dr. Koop’s Shape Up America! Campaign for Healthy Weight which John likes to consider amends for all his earlier work marketing Canada Dry, Pepsi, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and McDonald’s products. He is a veteran of the Vietnam War where he served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Field Artillery and was awarded a Bronze Star for Service.

Eve Lasswell, PsyD, is a licensed clinical psychologist who treats adults with substance use and co-occurring disorders. Dr. Lasswell is part of UC San Diego Health's Addiction Recovery and Treatment Services, which uses a harm-reduction approach to provide care for all stages of recovery from substance use disorders. She treats patients with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders and helps adults recover from addiction by encouraging behaviors that build wellness and emotional resilience.

 In addition, she has experience helping people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety, as well as concerns related to role transitions and interpersonal relationships.

 Dr. Lasswell also has experience providing care to diverse patient populations, including those with ethnic backgrounds different from her own, LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, and asexual) individuals, and current and former members of the US military.

 Her research aims to improve outcomes for people with substance use disorders and improving access to mental health services for the underserved.

 Dr. Lasswell completed a postdoctoral fellowship in addiction treatment at Veterans Affairs Salt Lake City Health Care System. She earned her doctorate in clinical psychology at Indiana State University.

 She is a member of the American Psychological Association's Society of Addiction Psychology.
