Overview
This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 56th Annual Conference addresses the most impactful addiction medicine publications from 2024-2025, their integration into clinical practice, and the influence of media coverage on their reach and relevance.
This Focus Session is a fast-paced, bottom-line-heavy, annual review of the highest impact peer-reviewed publications and newsmaker events across the field of Addiction Medicine, from 2024 through early 2025. Two presenters alternate covering a Top Ten, and select themes and publications particularly likely to change clinical practice.
The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.
This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Systems-based Practice.
This session addresses the following IPEC Competencies: Values and Ethics, Interprofessional Communication, Teams and Teamwork.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Rank and list the most read and highest impact addiction medicine publications from 2024-2025
- Integrate the most recent peer-reviewed findings into existing standards and clinical practice guidelines
- Consider the impact on media coverage and public attention on article rankings and overall impact

- Click Complete Post Test to answer multiple choice questions. Participants will have 10 attempts to pass and must answer 4 out of 5 questions correctly.
- Click Complete Evaluation to provide valuable activity feedback. Scroll down on all questions as there may be answer options that expand past the size of the window.
- Click the button Claim Medical Credits in the box titled Claim Credits & Certificate. Choose the type of credit and click submit. Click the button View/Print Certificate to save or print your certificate. You can view/print your certificate at any time by visiting the ASAM eLearning Center, clicking Dashboard, and clicking Transcript/Achievements.
- For Pharmacists ONLY: Complete the task entitled "Enter Pharmacist CPE Monitor Information (Pharmacists Only)". Pharmacists must claim credit and provide their eProfile ID and Birthdate via the Pharmacist CPE Monitor Information survey within 30 days of completing the activity. ASAM will not report CPE Credits claimed 30+ days after activity completion to ACPE. ASAM will not report CPE Credits without accurate and complete information. Sarah Wakeman
MD
Sarah E. Wakeman, MD is the Medical Director for the Mass General Hospital Substance Use Disorder Initiative, program director of the Mass General Addiction Medicine fellowship, Medical Director for Substance Use Disorder at Mass General Brigham, and an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. She is also the Medical Director of the Mass General Hospital Addiction Consult Team, co-chair of the Mass General Opioid Task Force, and co-chair of the Mass General Brigham Substance Use Steering Committee.
She received her A.B. from Brown University and her M.D. from Brown Medical School. She completed residency training in internal medicine and served as Chief Medical Resident at Mass General Hospital. She is a diplomate and fellow of the American Board of Addiction Medicine and board certified in Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. She served on Massachusetts' Governor Baker’s Opioid Addiction Working Group. Nationally, she serves on the American Society of Addiction Medicine Ethics Committee.
Clinically she provides specialty addiction and general medical care in the inpatient and outpatient setting at Mass General Hospital and the Mass General Charlestown Health Center. Her research interests include evaluating models for integrated substance use disorder treatment in general medical settings, low threshold treatment models, recovery coaching, physician attitudes and practice related to substance use disorder, and screening for substance use in primary care.

Joshua D. Lee MD, MSc is a Professor in the Dept. of Population Health and Medicine/General Internal Medicine and Clinical Innovation at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine. He is Co-Director of the Section on Tobacco, Alcohol, and Drug Use and Program Director of the NYU Fellowship in Addiction Medicine. He is a clinician researcher focused on addiction pharmacotherapies in primary care as and criminal justice populations.

In support of improving patient care, the American Society of Addiction Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
Physicians
The American Society of Addiction Medicine designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Nurses
This activity awards 1.25 Nursing contact hours.
PAs
ASAM has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1.25 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 1.25 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid until 05/06/2028. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.
Pharmacists
This activity will offer 1.25 pharmacy contact hours (.125 CEUs). Pharmacists will be asked to provide identifying information (e-Profile ID and DOB in MMDD format) in order to receive credit and allow reporting to CPE Monitor. (UAN: JA0000141-0000-25-021-H01)
