Overview
This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 54th Annual Conference addresses research opportunities and grant mechanisms, as well as guidance on research career pathways.
The session will consist of 3 presentations and opportunities for audience questions and answers. Geetha Subramaniam, MD will provide an overview of NIDA's mission, and strategic plan and review select funding opportunities by topics, Clinical Trials Network updates and inform the audience on NIDA data science/data sharing resources Elena Koustova, Ph.D., M.B.A. will provide a brief overview of the NIDA Small Business Innovation Research /Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) Programs and novel funding authorities such as prizes and open competitions.
The target audience for this introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Attendees will learn about NIDA's strategic plan, available research funding and data access opportunities
- Attendees will be able to identify the various research grant mechanisms and eligibility requirements for clinician scientists, trainees and entrepreneurs.
- Attendees will learn about how to access information related to NIDAs funding opportunities, navigate the grant submission and review process, and become familiar with program staff roles

All ASAM e-Learning Center refund requests must be made in writing to education@asam.org within 90 days of purchase. Geetha Subramaniam
MD, DFAPA, DFAACAP
Geetha Subramaniam MD, DFAPA, DFAACAP is the Deputy Director of the Center for Clinical Trials Network, at NIDA. In this role, she has been instrumental in developing research projects in a variety of topic areas, including addressing the prevention of substance abuse in adolescents, prevention and intervention of prescription stimulant misuse in youth. Previously, she was a full-time faculty member in the Division of Child Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the Associate Medical Director of Mountain Manor Treatment Center, Baltimore, MD, where she led clinical trials with adolescents with SUD and served as a preceptor to residents and fellows. She distinguished herself as a clinical and research expert in the assessment and treatment of adolescents and young adults with opioid use disorders. She is ABPN certified in General, Child, and Adolescent, and Addiction Psychiatry and a Distinguished Fellow of both the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Lindsey Friend, PhD
Research Training Program Officer
National Institute on Drug Abuse
Lindsey Friend is a Research Training and Career Development Program Officer (Health Science Administrator) in the Office of Research Training, Diversity, and Health Disparities at the National institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Her priority is to assist NIDAs extramural research training and career development programs. Lindsey received her doctorate in neuroscience from Brigham Young University where she studied cocaine and cannabinoid effects on reward circuitry. She did a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development studying glutamate receptor physiology before joining NIDA in 2020.
Elena Koustova, PhD, MBA
Director, Office of Translational Initiatives and Program Innovations (OTIPI)
National Institute on Drug Abuse/NIH
Elena Koustova, Ph.D., MBA is the Director of the Office of Translational Initiatives and Program Innovations (OTIPI) at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), NIH. Elena is a trained applied neuroscientist and an experienced biomedical product developer, with more than 25 years of practice in translational research in both the public and private sectors. Elena is a founding member of the NIH Blueprint Neurotherapeutics Network, the virtual pharma unit that provides neuroscience researchers with funding and access to a full range of industry-style drug development services and expertise. She also coordinates NIDA’s multimillion small business programs and establishes strategic partnerships in areas of drug development, entrepreneurship, translational research, and technology transfer. Before joining NIH, Elena worked at DOV Pharmaceutical, where she directed programs on the discovery of novel targets and drugs, with a particular focus on treatments for depression and pain. Elena earned her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Moscow State University and her MBA in Executive Leadership and Organizational Innovation from the Gallup Organization/UNL. She completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in neuropharmacology at the NIH Intramural Program.
