Overview
This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 54th Annual Conference addresses the pharmacology and clinical/preclinical evidence for the use of psychedelics and psychedelic-assisted therapy for various substance use disorder (SUDs).
There is growing evidence that psychedelics may hold treatment potential for alcohol, opioid, tobacco, and other substance use disorders. This session of researchers and clinicians aims to familiarize addiction specialists with this modality to help them prepare for its likely arrival to the clinic in coming years. Past and current clinical trials investigating their utility in the treatment of SUDs, as well as well as safety considerations, anticipated challenges with their implementation, and other issues around equitable access are discussed.
The target audience for this introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- describe the pharmacology and clinical/preclinical evidence for the use of psychedelics and psychedelic-assisted therapy for various substance use disorder (SUDs).
- describe safety considerations around the use of psychedelics.
- demonstrate knowledge about challenges to incorporating psychedelics and psychedelic-assisted therapy into the current SUDs treatment system.

Jeremy Weleff, DO is an addiction psychiatry fellow at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, and a research fellow at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. He completed his psychiatry residency at the Cleveland Clinic and his undergraduate medical education at Michigan State University. His research interests include the social determinants of health, homelessness, addiction, the history of psychiatry, and novel therapeutics.
Brian Barnett, MD

Brian Barnett, MD is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and Co-Director of the Treatment-Resistant Depression Clinic at Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Barnett completed his psychiatry residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and McLean Hospital in 2017. Afterwards, he completed his fellowship in addiction psychiatry at Partners Healthcare in 2018 and a fellowship in forensic psychiatry at University Hospitals/Case Western Reserve University in 2019. Dr. Barnett’s primary research interests are in catatonia, mood disorders, psychedelics, and psychedelic-assisted therapy. He is the primary investigator on a clinical trial assessing the efficacy of LSD for generalized anxiety disorder and a soon-to-launch clinical trial of psilocybin-assisted therapy for treatment-resistant depression. Dr. Barnett also writes about mental health and addiction issues for the public, and his writing has been featured in Huffington Post, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, and other outlets.
Anahita Bassir Nia, MD

Anahita Bassir Nia, MD, joined Yale School of Medicine in July 2018 as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, after completing her psychiatry residency at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, and her addiction psychiatry fellowship-academic track at Mount Sinai West, Icahn School of Medicine, New York.
Her research interests are, mainly, in translational research on addiction and mental health disorders. She is particularly interested in the biological effects of acute and chronic stress on developing substance use disorders, as well as, the effects of substance use on stress response and psychiatric symptoms. She has been focused on the use of cannabinoids (partial and full agonists) and endocannabinoid system dysregulations in relation to childhood trauma and substance use disorders, particularly opioid use disorder. She is also interested in the potential use of psychedelics in treatment of substance use disorder, particularly alcohol use disorder.
