Overview

This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 54th Annual Conference addresses Medicare's current coverage of substance use disorders, including some recent improvements to the program and what problems are still outstanding, as well as research on the anticipated costs and cost offsets of closing the Medicare coverage gaps.

Individuals over age 65 and those with disabilities are unable to get the substance use disorder treatment they need because Medicare has outdated and discriminatory rules and policies. This session will focus on Medicare's current coverage of substance use disorders, including some recent improvements to the program and what problems are still outstanding, as well as research on the anticipated costs and cost offsets of closing the Medicare coverage gaps. Together, we can make parity a reality for everyone.

The target audience for this introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

1. identify the federal policy proposals that will improve access to substance use disorder care in Medicare and demonstrate the impact such policies would have.
2. analyze the ways in which these policy proposals could be strengthened to meet the needs of Medicare beneficiaries and substance use disorder treatment providers.
3. advocate for these proposals with the understanding that the net cost of improving Medicare coverage of substance use disorder treatment is minimal while the impact is significant.

4. Click the button Claim Medical Credits in the box titled Claim Credits & Certificate. Choose the type of credit and click submit. Click the button View/Print Certificate to save or print your certificate. You can view/print your certificate at any time by visiting the ASAM eLearning Center, clicking Dashboard, and clicking Transcript/Achievements.

American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM)
The American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) has approved this activity for 1.25 credits towards ABPM MOC Part II requirements.

American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA)
This activity contributes to the CME component of the American Board of Anesthesiology’s redesigned Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology TM (MOCA®) program, known as MOCA 2.0®.

American Board of Pediatrics (ABP)
Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the activity, with individual assessments of the participant and feedback to the participant, enables the participant to earn 1.25 MOC points in the American Board of Pediatrics’ (ABP) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABP MOC credit.

American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM)
Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn 1.25 Medical Knowledge MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credits.

American Board of Surgery (ABS)
Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the learner to earn credit toward the CME and/or Self-Assessment requirements of the American Board of Surgery’s Continuous Certification program.
