Overview

This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 54th Annual Conference addresses opportunities to improve systems and processes of care for patients with methamphetamine addiction

This session presents preliminary findings from Beginning Early and Assertive Treatment for Methamphetamine Use Disorder (BEAT Meth), a CDC-funded strategy to design treatment and surveillance strategies for methamphetamine addiction. Attendees will hear original research findings on clinical protocols and outcomes for patients presenting with methamphetamine addiction; diagnostic criteria for methamphetamine-induced psychosis; patient perspectives on treatment. The design of a new randomized controlled trial for methamphetamine treatment is introduced.

The target audience for this advanced level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Apply medical and psychotherapeutic treatments for patients presenting to hospital settings with disorders related methamphetamine use
  2. Distinguish methamphetamine-induced psychotic disorders from alternative etiologies of psychosis, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder
  3. Identify opportunities to improve systems and processes of care for patients with methamphetamine addiction

Scott Simpson

MD MPH

Scott Simpson MD is Medical Director of Psychiatric Emergency Services at Denver Health Medical Center and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Simpson has published on the management of substance use disorders in the emergency setting and part of the Denver Health team that launced Colorado's first 24/7 buprenorphine induction program. Dr. Simpson is board certified in general psychiatry, addiction medicine, and consultation-liaison psychiatry.

Alia Al-Tayyib, PhD

Alia Al-Tayyib, PhD, MSPH, is an Associate Research Scientist at the Public Health Institute at Denver Health and an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the Colorado School of Public Health. Dr. Al-Tayyib's primary research interests are in behavioral risks for acquiring and transmitting infections, such as HIV and hepatitis C, with a focus on the social and structural determinants of risk. Since 2007, she has served as the site PI for the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) system in the Denver metro area. More recently, Dr. Al-Tayyib has focused on social network studies examining the transition from oral ingestion of prescription opioids to injection drug use among at-risk youth and on developing interventions to keep people engaged in care for substance use disorders. The overarching goal of her work is to reduce the spread of infections, decrease substance use, and improve public health. Dr. Al-Tayyib currently leads the research efforts for the Denver Health Center for Addiction Medicine. She received her PhD and MSPH degrees in Epidemiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is an alumna of the Clinical Faculty Scholar and the Leadership for Innovative Team Science programs at the Colorado Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute.

Katherine Camfield, MD, MPH

Katherine Camfield, MD, MPH is a board-certified adult psychiatrist with special interests emergency psychiatry, addiction, and reproductive psychiatry. She is currently an Emergency Psychiatry Attending at Denver Health Medical Center, which includes being a Clinical Instructor at the University of Colorado School or Medicine. Prior to taking this position, she completed a one-year Emergency Psychiatry Fellowship at Denver Health Medical Center, where she received extensive training on advanced emergency psychiatry practices. Dr. Camfield’s research interests include management of addiction in the emergency department setting and perinatal psychiatric emergencies.

Dr. Camfield completed her adult psychiatry residency at the University of Southern California and LAC+USC Medical Center. During her time there, she received multiple resident awards, including the 2019 Outstanding Teaching Award for the Keck School of Medicine psychiatry Clerkship, the 2020 Resident Presentation Award for “A focus on Wellness to Improve the Well-being of Third-year Psychiatry Residents,” and the 2021 Resident Mentor Award. Dr. Camfield had multiple posters accepted into the American Psychiatric Association’s national conference as a resident. While in Los Angeles, Dr. Camfield was also very involved in the Southern California Psychiatric Society (SCPS). She was elected as one of two resident-fellow members for the Southern California district branch for two consecutive years, and in 2020 received the Outstanding Resident Award for her work with this organization.

Debbie Rinehart, PhD

Deborah Rinehart, PhD is the Associate Director of the Research Methods Core and a Senior Research Scientist in the Center for Health Systems Research in the Office of Research at Denver Health and an Associate Professor in the School of Medicine at the University of Colorado. Dr. Rinehart has been working in behavioral health research for 25 years and has been conducting health services research in a safety-net health setting for the last fourteen years. Her specific areas of research interest include maternal and child health, sexual and reproductive health, and the integration of behavioral and physical health services. Her research utilizes qualitative and quantitative methods to develop and evaluate the impact of behavioral health interventions. She received her PhD in Health and Behavioral Sciences from the University of Colorado and MA in Health Psychology from the University of Northern Arizona.
