Overview
This 6-hour, live-virtual course is the recommended first step to understanding the ASAM Criteria 4th Edition and covers developing patient-centered service plans as well as making objective decisions about patient admission, continuing care, and transfer/discharge for individuals with addictive, substance-related, and co-occurring conditions.
The workshop content is based on information found in The ASAM Criteria: Treatment Criteria for Addictive, Substance-Related, and Co-Occurring Conditions, Fourth Edition, and incorporates an opportunity for participants to practice applying the information through case-based activities. Learners will have the opportunity to ask the presenter questions in real-time, participate in polling questions, and break into small groups.
The ASAM Criteria Course can also serve as a bridge to the implementation of a provider credentialing program. Providers who have completed ASAM-approved training can gain the initial skill set to deliver care in compliance with The ASAM Criteria.
The target audience for this introductory, intermediate, and advanced course include counselors, social workers, payers, administrators, and other clinical staff.

- Describe the underlying principles and concepts of the ASAM Criteria
- Identify the six dimensions of the ASAM Criteria’s multidimensional patient assessment
- Determine treatment priorities based on risk assessment to guide treatment and service planning
- Determine an appropriate level of care and treatment priorities based on risk assessment
- Implement the ASAM Criteria, in the context of system challenges, for patients with addiction to ensure appropriate level of care and treatment outcomes

Refunds & Cancellations
All ASAM e-Learning Center refund requests must be made in writing to Education@ASAM.org within 90 days of purchase. Christine R. Mulford
RN, MSN, FNP-BC
Christine Mulford, RN, MSN, FNP-BC is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner who brings more than two decades of clinical practice and leadership to the field of addiction medicine. She has practiced at all levels of outpatient care, including telemedicine. Additionally, she has directed an inpatient medically managed withdrawal management program. Her special interests are meeting the unique treatment needs of LGBTQ+ individuals and reducing stigma for all individuals with substance use disorders.
Ms. Mulford earned her Master of Science in Nursing from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. She has served as a guest lecturer for Arizona State University Project Echo. At ASAM, she holds positions on The ASAM Criteria Education Planning Committee as well as the ASAM CONTINUUM sub-committee. She has been an ASAM Faculty member since 2019.

Joanna Linn
PhD, LCMHCS, LCAS, CCS
Dr. Linn has been involved in the field of mental health and addiction for 20 years. She has worked in various academic and leadership roles in both North Carolina and Arizona, including Program Director and a Strategic Initiatives and Special Projects Director. She has also worked in Corporate Compliance as an investigator for Medicaid Fraud and Abuse. She began her career in an Opioid Treatment Center, and her focus has remained on co-occurring disorders, professional resilience, and compassion fatigue.
Her private practice work includes consulting managed care organizations. As a member of the North Carolina Commission for Mental Health and Development Disabilities, she served both on the Rules and Advisory committees. She has worked with ASAM as a faculty member and past member of the Fundamentals of Addiction Medicine Program Planning Committee since 2021.
She received her master’s degree in Community Counseling from Wake Forest University and her Doctorate in Counseling and Counselor Education from the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. Joanna is currently working in the forefront of mental health care and currently resides in North Carolina. In her down time, she enjoys kayaking, running, writing fiction, and working with rescue animals.
