On-Demand Session
Overview
This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 54th Annual Conference addresses the skills and knowledge necessary for addiction specialists to actively participate in state advocacy.
This session will review skills and knowledge necessary for addiction specialist to actively participate in state advocacy. The session will include demonstrations and examples of advocacy (e.g. how to testify, write an op-ed), as well as reviewing the trainee advocacy curriculum developed at the University of Colorado. At the end of the session, participants will make a SMART goal (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time-based) for how they personally will participate in legislative process.
The target audience for this intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Describe the legislative process including the role and importance of addiction specialist involvement. Identify tools and support available to actively participate in advocacy.
- Apply skills demonstrated in workshop when participating in state-level advocacy such as how to identify local representatives, track a bill through the legislative process, and testify in committee.
- Synthesize current interest and newly-acquired skills when developing a SMART goal to guide future advocacy efforts.

Refunds & Cancellations
All ASAM e-Learning Center refund requests must be made in writing to education@asam.org within 90 days of purchase. Those requesting refunds for courses that are in progress will receive partial refunds or e-Learning Center credit. Automatic full refunds will be made for any course with a live-course component that has been cancelled.

- Click Complete Evaluation to provide valuable activity feedback. Scroll down on all questions as there may be answer options that expand past the size of the window.
- Click the button Claim Medical Credits in the box titled Claim Credits & Certificate. Choose the type of credit and click submit. Click the button View/Print Certificate to save or print your certificate. You can view/print your certificate at any time by visiting the ASAM eLearning Center, clicking Dashboard, and clicking Transcript/Achievements.

University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus
Stephanie Stewart, MD, MPHS, FASAM, MRO is a core faculty member for the Addiction Medicine Fellowship at the University of Colorado. She serves as the Public Policy Chair of the Colorado Society of Addiction Medicine (COSAM) and as an ASAM Legislative Action Committee Member. She is passionate about facilitating active participation in Colorado's legislative process and developed a formal advocacy and policy curriculum for addiction medicine and psychiatry fellows and preventive medicine residents.

Kaylin Klie, MD, MA, FASAM
Assistant Professor, Family Medicine and Psychiatry
University of Colorado School of Medicine
Kaylin A. Klie, MD, MA is a dually-board certified physician in Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine, with a clinical focus in perinatal addiction and the integration of addiction medicine into primary care at the University of Colorado, where she is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Family Medicine and Psychiatry.
Prior to medicine, Dr. Klie trained as a Marriage and Family Therapist. She then completed medical school at Rush Medical College. She completed residency in Family Medicine followed by fellowship in Addiction Medicine at the University of Colorado. She is the founder of the Denver Health and University of Colorado PeAR (Perinatal Addiction and Recovery) clinics, where pregnant and parenting people are provided integrated prenatal/post-partum care and substance use disorder treatment.
She serves as the Program Director for the University of Colorado Addiction Medicine Fellowship, and is core faculty for the University of Colorado Addiction Psychiatry Fellowhip. She enjoys teaching and mentoring medical students, PA students, residents from a variety of training programs, and addiction fellows.
Dr. Klie is an active member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, Colorado Society of Addiction Medicine, the Colorado Substance Exposed Newborn Collaborative, Alpha Omega Alpha, and the ASAM Women's Action Group. She lives in Denver, CO with her husband and sons.
