Overview

This 75-minute on-demand session from the ASAM 55th Annual Conference addresses the clinical risk and benefit of the various opioid reversal agents in the management of patients following an opioid overdose with special attention to patients using fentanyl and nitazenes.

An improved understanding of the clinical pharmacology of naloxone, nalmefene, and related agents will provide attendees with the tools to choose among various opioid antagonist products and formulations and provide targeted, efficient, safe overdose management to patients with acute opioid overdose or precipitated opioid withdrawal.

The target audience for this Intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

1. Describe the pharmacology of naloxone, nalmefene, naltrexone, and buprenorphine including their pharmacokinetic profiles
2. Discuss the clinical risk and benefit of the various opioid reversal agents in the management of patients following an opioid overdose with special attention to patients using fentanyl and nitazenes.
3. Explain the risk and treatment of precipitated withdrawal in the acute care setting, including the use of buprenorphine.

Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit.
