Overview

This 1-hour on-demand session from ASAM Virtual 2021 addresses caring for patients with SUDs in the acute hospital setting and the difficult balance of what is best for the patient, patient autonomy, risk of harm to others, and whether a treatment is medically futile.

Ethical challenges are common in caring for patients with substance use disorders in the acute hospital setting. In the addiction field there is general agreement about our ethical obligation to use proven treatments for addiction in hospitalized patients. Once an addiction medicine consult service has been established, hospital addiction consultants often have to respond when a patient has been found to be using illicit substances or when specialists refuse to perform needed medical procedures due to patients’ SUD history. These issues require us to balance what is best for the patient, patient autonomy, risk of harm to others, and whether a treatment is medically futile. This session, taught by presenters with expertise in hospital-based addiction medicine consultation practice and medical ethics, explores these questions.

The target audience for this intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Interpersonal Skills, Professionalism, Systems Based Practice.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

1. Describe how an ethical framework of patient care fits in with the medical model of addiction and the principles of harm reduction
2. Differentiate between ethical dilemmas and legal or policy issues that factor in to making decisions about the care of hospitalized individuals with substance use disorders
3. Weigh ethical principles such as autonomy, beneficence, nonmalificence and justice to develop solutions to ethical dilemmas in hospitalized patients with substance use disorders

2. Click "Complete Post Test" to answer quiz questions. You will have 10 attempts and must get at least 2 out of 3 questions correct. After completing the quiz, return to the Contents tab. 
3. Click "Complete Evaluation" to answer evaluation questions. Scroll down on all questions, there are answers that expand past the size of the window. 
4. Click the button “Claim Credits” in the box titled “Claim Credits & Certificate." Choose the type of credit and click submit. Click the button “View/Print Certificate” to save or print your certificate. If you ever lose your certificate, you can come back to the ASAM e-Learning Center and view it on your transcript (found in the Dashboard).
