Overview

The Board Exam Study Course is the essential primer for physicians and other healthcare professionals who are preparing for a career in addiction medicine, and for primary care providers who wish to increase their skills in identifying and managing patients whose medical problems are caused or exacerbated by substance use disorders.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion attendees will be able to:

  • Demonstrate practical knowledge on the neurobiology of addiction and articulate its activity in terms useful in a clinical setting
  • Describe the effects of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs in both tolerant and non-tolerant individuals
  • Describe the process for diagnosing addiction and differentiating the symptoms of addiction from those of other medical or psychiatric disorders
  • Explain the various pharmacologic and psychosocial treatments for addictive disorders and describe the factors that should be considered in selecting a treatment modality to match the needs of a specific patient
  • Describe the precipitants of relapse and current evidence-based practices to prevent and manage relapse

    Introductory remarks and welcome to the ASAM Board Exam Study Course 2020 - Virtual, followed by a session on addiction from a neurobiological perspective including new concepts. pyschosocial interventions, and pharmacological treatments.

    From a neurobiological perspective, addiction can be seen as the hijacking of the pleasure-reward pathways of the brain with a concomitant weakening of its executive function. In 2020, the fundamental model has been expanded to include newer ideas such as motivational circuitry, anti-reward pathways, and interception. These neurobiological concepts can explain some of the successes and failures of addiction treatment in the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. Psychosocial interventions (primarily cognitive behavior therapy, mutual help groups, and motivational interviewing) and pharmacological treatments (such as agonists, antagonists, and partial agonists) form the basis of addiction treatment today.

    Petros Levounis

    MD, MA, DFASAM

    Petros Levounis, MD, MA, DFASAM serves as professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Associate Dean for Professional Development at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. Dr. Levounis came to Rutgers from Columbia University where he served as director of the Addiction Institute of New York from 2002 to 2013.

    Dr. Levounis is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Stanford University where he studied chemistry and biophysics before receiving his medical education at Stanford University School of Medicine and the Medical College of Pennsylvania. During medical school, he researched the effects of social class on patient-physician relationships in Oxford, England, and received an MA degree in sociology from Stanford. In 1994, he moved to New York City to train in psychiatry at the New York State Psychiatric Institute of Columbia University. He graduated from Columbia earning the National Institute of Mental Health Outstanding Resident Award and went on to complete his fellowship in addiction psychiatry at New York University.

    Dr. Levounis has written numerous articles, monographs, and book chapters; has lectured extensively on addiction topics throughout the United States and abroad; and has been interviewed by CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN, FOX, The Martha Stewart Radio Show, The New York Times, and The Washington Post, among others.

    Dr. Levounis has served on the boards of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and the American Board of Addiction Medicine, and from 2005 to 2009 chaired the national Committee on Addiction Treatment of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Dr. Levounis is a Betty Ford Scholar, a recipient of the Association of Gay and Lesbian Psychiatrists’ Distinguished Service Award and the ASAM Educator of the Year Award, and a distinguished fellow of the APA and ASAM. In 2017, he was elected as an honorary member of the World Psychiatric Association.

    Dr. Levounis has published thirteen books including the self-help paperback “Sober Siblings: How to Help Your Alcoholic Brother or Sister—and Not Lose Yourself,” the textbook of “Substance Dependence and Co-Occurring Psychiatric Disorders,” “Motivational Interviewing for Clinical Practice,” “The Behavioral Addictions,” “Becoming Mindful,” “Pocket Guide to LGBTQ Mental Health,” and “Office-Based Buprenorphine Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder,” now in its second edition. Dr. Levounis is currently working on the first textbook of Technological Addictions. His books have been translated into French, German, Hungarian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. Dr. Levounis is married to actor Lukas Hassel and lives in New York City.

    This session highlights the basic science and clinical concepts of alcohol and alcohol use disorder. Learners will be able to outline the basic concepts of alcohol use disorder such as, standard drink sizes, screening for alcohol use disorder, general alcohol withdrawal management concepts, and the use of relapse prevention medications. Learners will also be able to describe alcohol use disorder definition and epidemiology. The session will cover how to recognize the symptoms, time course, and treatment for alcohol withdrawal. The session will also teach how to recognize how and when to start relapse prevention medications for alcohol use disorders.

    Ricardo Restrepo

    MD, MPH

    Ricardo Restrepo, MD, MPH finished his medical school in Medellín, Colombia. He then did his residency training in Psychiatry at Boston University Medical Center where he completed a fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry. He received an MPH in Global Public Health from NYU in 2008, while working at St Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital, where he was Director of the Addiction Psychopharmacology Clinic at the Addiction Institute of New York. 

    Since 2012, he works at the Long Beach VA Hospital, where he is the Medical Director of the SATP/Buprenorphine Clinic. Ricardo holds an academic position as Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California (Irvine and Riverside) School of Medicine and most recently at the Charles Drew University, Los Angeles. He teaches and supervises students, psychiatry, family medicine and internal medicine residents. He serves as committee member of the American Academy of Addiction Medicine (AAAP) as well as on the California Society of Addiction Medicine (CSAM) Conference planning committee. 

     Ricardo's academic interests include the psychotherapy and psychopharmacology of addiction and the teaching of Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. He is actively involved in issues related to transcultural psychiatry and behavioral addictions. He has worked with immigrant populations in the United States for over 20 years. As a volunteer for Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), he has participated in projects in the United States, Latin America and the Middle East. He has served as a United Nations Consultant since 2005. 

    Dr. Restrepo has written chapters on addiction and human rights textbooks. He is the co-author of textbooks on buprenorphine as well as women’s health and addiction, and he cooperated with the Translation of DSM-5 to Spanish. He is board re-certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry and a professional musician.

    Outlines the basic concepts of sedative use disorder: Neurobiology, an introduction to sedative withdrawal and the use of clinical strategies to address intoxication and withdrawal of benzodiazepines, barbiturates and GHB.     Ricardo Restrepo

    Soteri Polydorou

    MD

    Soteri Polydorou, MD is a practicing physician with board certifications in Addiction Medicine and Internal Medicine.  His involvement in the field of substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and education include serving as Medical Director of Addiction Services for Northwell Health and Associate Professor at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.  Northwell Health is a regional health system of over 20 hospitals and nearly 800 outpatient facilities.  Dr. Polydorou is a member of various governmental and professional committees tasked with supporting the delivery and organization of addiction treatment.  Dr. Polydorou’s interests include public policy initiatives to address substance use disorders, optimizing access to SUD services within health systems, and implementation of innovative opioid use disorder treatments within various healthcare clinical settings.

    Jill M. Williams, MD, is Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Division of Addiction Psychiatry at the Rutgers University-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick. She also holds faculty appointments at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey and the Rutgers Center for Addiction Studies. The focus of Dr. Williams work has been in addressing tobacco in individuals with mental illness or other addictions through treatment and systems interventions. Dr Williams has developed training curricula for behavioral health professionals and manualized treatments for treating tobacco in mental health settings.  She is a Board Certified Addiction Psychiatrist and member of the APA Council on Addictions. Dr. Williams has received research funding from sources including the National Institutes on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and American Legacy Foundation. Her publications have appeared in numerous journals including Nicotine and Tobacco Research, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment and in 2015 she was the recipient of the Remarkable Achievement Award of the NJ Psychiatric Association.

    Carla Marienfeld

    MD, DFAPA, FASAM

    Carla Marienfeld, MD, is a board-certified addiction psychiatrist and Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Diego who supports recovery in an evidence based, harm-reduction approach through therapy, motivational interviewing, and medication treatment. Her research involves analysis of electronic medical record data for individuals with substance use disorders. She has authored or co-authored over 35 peer reviewed articles, book chapters, practice guidelines, and invited commentaries, and she edited two books: Motivational Interviewing for Clinical Practice and Absolute Addiction Psychiatry Review: An essential board exam study guide. She has been highly involved in education of colleagues and trainees about addiction psychiatry and effective interventions including buprenorphine treatment and motivational interviewing, and she is the fellowship director for the UCSD Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship. Dr. Marienfeld completed a fellowship in addiction psychiatry and residency training in psychiatry at Yale. During her residency, she was chief resident of psychiatry and founded (and later led) the Yale Global Mental Health Program. She earned a medical degree with honors from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

    Michael H. Baumann

    PhD

    Michael H. Baumann, PhD is a Staff Scientist and Chief of the Designer Drug Research Unit (DDRU), at the Intramural Research Program (IRP) of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in Baltimore, Maryland.  The DDRU collects, analyzes and disseminates the most up-to-date information about the pharmacology and toxicology of newly-emerging synthetic drugs of abuse (i.e., designer drugs), more formally known as new psychoactive substances (NPS).  Working with partner organizations such as the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the National Drug Early Warning System (NDEWS), Dr. Baumann is kept informed about trends in the misuse of NPS.  The DDRU has characterized the molecular mechanism of action and pharmacological effects for a diversity of NPS, including “bath salts” (synthetic stimulants), “spice” (synthetic cannabinoids) and synthetic opioids.  Findings from the DDRU inform law enforcement personnel, health care workers, clinical toxicologists, forensic scientists, basic researchers, and policymakers who are involved in responding to the global spread of NPS and the associated public health risks.

    Abigail J. Herron

    DO, FAPA, DFASAM

    Abigail J. Herron, DO, is the Vice President of Behavioral Health and the Director of Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine at the Institute for Family Health. She is board certified in adult psychiatry, addiction psychiatry and addiction medicine, and is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Family Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai. Dr. Herron is a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. She graduated from Wesleyan University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Herron completed her psychiatry residency at St. Luke's and Roosevelt Hospitals, where she was also chief resident, and a clinical research fellowship in addiction psychiatry at Columbia University and the New York State Psychiatric Institute. Her academic interests include integrated care, women’s health, and medical education. She is the co-editor of the Addiction Casebook, and the editor-in-chief of ASAM’s Essentials of Addiction Medicine. Dr. Herron is also in private practice in New York.

    Abigail J. Herron

    DO, FAPA, DFASAM

    Abigail J. Herron, DO, is the Vice President of Behavioral Health and the Director of Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine at the Institute for Family Health. She is board certified in adult psychiatry, addiction psychiatry and addiction medicine, and is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Family Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai. Dr. Herron is a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. She graduated from Wesleyan University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Herron completed her psychiatry residency at St. Luke's and Roosevelt Hospitals, where she was also chief resident, and a clinical research fellowship in addiction psychiatry at Columbia University and the New York State Psychiatric Institute. Her academic interests include integrated care, women’s health, and medical education. She is the co-editor of the Addiction Casebook, and the editor-in-chief of ASAM’s Essentials of Addiction Medicine. Dr. Herron is also in private practice in New York.

    Erin A. Zerbo

    MD, FASAM

    Erin Zerbo, MD, received her B.S. in Brain and Cognitive Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2003, and her M.D. from New York University School of Medicine in 2007. She remained at NYU for a general psychiatry residency and a one-year addiction psychiatry fellowship, graduating in 2012. Since 2014, she has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and the Associate Director of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry. In addition to managing a large buprenorphine practice dedicated to Newark residents, she is also the director of the Northern New Jersey Center of Excellence in Medication-Assisted Treatment, a new statewide opioid training and education initiative. Dr. Zerbo serves as the co-Chair of the Council on Education of the New Jersey Psychiatric Association, and she has published and lectured extensively in the field of addiction. Her primary interest is the treatment of substance use disorders in underserved and disadvantaged populations. She is a co-editor of the book "Pocket Guide to Addiction Assessment and Treatment" (APA, 2106), and the lead editor of "Becoming Mindful: Integrating Mindfulness into Your Psychiatric Practice" (APA, 2017).

    Paul H. Earley

    MD, FASAM

    Paul H. Earley, MD, DFASAM has worked in Addiction Medicine for 35 years. He treats all types of addictive disorders and specializes in the assessment, treatment, and management of health care professionals. As a therapist, he works with patients already in recovery, providing long term therapy for those who suffer from this disease. His professional expertise extends to advocacy for professionals before agencies and licensing boards. Dr. Earley is a dynamic speaker and educator; he speaks and trains on topics of addiction, its treatment and addiction among health care professionals. In addition, he trains therapists about the neurobiological basis of psychotherapy. In his travels, he has provided training in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, Iceland and Switzerland. He is the author of three books and numerous research articles on addiction and its treatment. His two most recent books, RecoveryMind Training and the RecoveryMind Training Implementation Guide describe an innovative and comprehensive system designed to reengineer addiction treatment. He is a contributing author to the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Textbook: Principles of Addiction Medicine, as author of the chapter: Physician Health Programs and Addiction among Physicians and a contributing author to the ASAM Criteria. His work was featured in the documentary series on addiction entitled Close to Home by Bill Moyers. Dr. Earley is the Immediate Past President of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). He is the Medical Director of the Georgia Professionals Health Program, Inc., the Physicians Health Program (PHP) for the state of Georgia and the Immediate Past President of the North American Federation of State Physician Health Programs (FSPHP).     Petros Levounis

    MD, MA, DFASAM

    Petros Levounis, MD, MA, DFASAM serves as professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Associate Dean for Professional Development at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. Dr. Levounis came to Rutgers from Columbia University where he served as director of the Addiction Institute of New York from 2002 to 2013.

    Dr. Levounis is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Stanford University where he studied chemistry and biophysics before receiving his medical education at Stanford University School of Medicine and the Medical College of Pennsylvania. During medical school, he researched the effects of social class on patient-physician relationships in Oxford, England, and received an MA degree in sociology from Stanford. In 1994, he moved to New York City to train in psychiatry at the New York State Psychiatric Institute of Columbia University. He graduated from Columbia earning the National Institute of Mental Health Outstanding Resident Award and went on to complete his fellowship in addiction psychiatry at New York University.

    Dr. Levounis has written numerous articles, monographs, and book chapters; has lectured extensively on addiction topics throughout the United States and abroad; and has been interviewed by CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN, FOX, The Martha Stewart Radio Show, The New York Times, and The Washington Post, among others.

    Dr. Levounis has served on the boards of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and the American Board of Addiction Medicine, and from 2005 to 2009 chaired the national Committee on Addiction Treatment of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Dr. Levounis is a Betty Ford Scholar, a recipient of the Association of Gay and Lesbian Psychiatrists’ Distinguished Service Award and the ASAM Educator of the Year Award, and a distinguished fellow of the APA and ASAM. In 2017, he was elected as an honorary member of the World Psychiatric Association.

    Dr. Levounis has published thirteen books including the self-help paperback “Sober Siblings: How to Help Your Alcoholic Brother or Sister—and Not Lose Yourself,” the textbook of “Substance Dependence and Co-Occurring Psychiatric Disorders,” “Motivational Interviewing for Clinical Practice,” “The Behavioral Addictions,” “Becoming Mindful,” “Pocket Guide to LGBTQ Mental Health,” and “Office-Based Buprenorphine Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder,” now in its second edition. Dr. Levounis is currently working on the first textbook of Technological Addictions. His books have been translated into French, German, Hungarian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. Dr. Levounis is married to actor Lukas Hassel and lives in New York City.

    Ricardo Restrepo

    MD, MPH

    Ricardo Restrepo, MD, MPH finished his medical school in Medellín, Colombia. He then did his residency training in Psychiatry at Boston University Medical Center where he completed a fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry. He received an MPH in Global Public Health from NYU in 2008, while working at St Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital, where he was Director of the Addiction Psychopharmacology Clinic at the Addiction Institute of New York. 

    Since 2012, he works at the Long Beach VA Hospital, where he is the Medical Director of the SATP/Buprenorphine Clinic. Ricardo holds an academic position as Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California (Irvine and Riverside) School of Medicine and most recently at the Charles Drew University, Los Angeles. He teaches and supervises students, psychiatry, family medicine and internal medicine residents. He serves as committee member of the American Academy of Addiction Medicine (AAAP) as well as on the California Society of Addiction Medicine (CSAM) Conference planning committee. 

     Ricardo's academic interests include the psychotherapy and psychopharmacology of addiction and the teaching of Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. He is actively involved in issues related to transcultural psychiatry and behavioral addictions. He has worked with immigrant populations in the United States for over 20 years. As a volunteer for Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), he has participated in projects in the United States, Latin America and the Middle East. He has served as a United Nations Consultant since 2005. 

    Dr. Restrepo has written chapters on addiction and human rights textbooks. He is the co-author of textbooks on buprenorphine as well as women’s health and addiction, and he cooperated with the Translation of DSM-5 to Spanish. He is board re-certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry and a professional musician.

    Jill M. Williams, MD, is Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Division of Addiction Psychiatry at the Rutgers University-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick. She also holds faculty appointments at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey and the Rutgers Center for Addiction Studies. The focus of Dr. Williams work has been in addressing tobacco in individuals with mental illness or other addictions through treatment and systems interventions. Dr Williams has developed training curricula for behavioral health professionals and manualized treatments for treating tobacco in mental health settings.  She is a Board Certified Addiction Psychiatrist and member of the APA Council on Addictions. Dr. Williams has received research funding from sources including the National Institutes on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and American Legacy Foundation. Her publications have appeared in numerous journals including Nicotine and Tobacco Research, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment and in 2015 she was the recipient of the Remarkable Achievement Award of the NJ Psychiatric Association. 

    Carla Marienfeld

    MD, DFAPA, FASAM

    Carla Marienfeld, MD, is a board-certified addiction psychiatrist and Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Diego who supports recovery in an evidence based, harm-reduction approach through therapy, motivational interviewing, and medication treatment. Her research involves analysis of electronic medical record data for individuals with substance use disorders. She has authored or co-authored over 35 peer reviewed articles, book chapters, practice guidelines, and invited commentaries, and she edited two books: Motivational Interviewing for Clinical Practice and Absolute Addiction Psychiatry Review: An essential board exam study guide. She has been highly involved in education of colleagues and trainees about addiction psychiatry and effective interventions including buprenorphine treatment and motivational interviewing, and she is the fellowship director for the UCSD Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship. Dr. Marienfeld completed a fellowship in addiction psychiatry and residency training in psychiatry at Yale. During her residency, she was chief resident of psychiatry and founded (and later led) the Yale Global Mental Health Program. She earned a medical degree with honors from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

    Michael H. Baumann

    PhD

    Michael H. Baumann, PhD is a Staff Scientist and Chief of the Designer Drug Research Unit (DDRU), at the Intramural Research Program (IRP) of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in Baltimore, Maryland.  The DDRU collects, analyzes and disseminates the most up-to-date information about the pharmacology and toxicology of newly-emerging synthetic drugs of abuse (i.e., designer drugs), more formally known as new psychoactive substances (NPS).  Working with partner organizations such as the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the National Drug Early Warning System (NDEWS), Dr. Baumann is kept informed about trends in the misuse of NPS.  The DDRU has characterized the molecular mechanism of action and pharmacological effects for a diversity of NPS, including “bath salts” (synthetic stimulants), “spice” (synthetic cannabinoids) and synthetic opioids.  Findings from the DDRU inform law enforcement personnel, health care workers, clinical toxicologists, forensic scientists, basic researchers, and policymakers who are involved in responding to the global spread of NPS and the associated public health risks.

    Annie Levesque

    MD, MSc

    Annie Levesque, MD, MSc is the Medical Director of the Opioid Treatment Program at the Addiction Institute at Mount Sinai West. She is also the Associate Director of the Fellowship in Addiction Medicine Program at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. After receiving her medical degree from the University of Montreal, Dr. Levesque completed a Family Medicine and a Clinician-Scholar residency program at the University of Montreal, an Addiction Medicine fellowship at Mount Sinai West Hospital and a Masters in Experimental Medicine at McGill University.

    Jacqueline Landess

    MD, JD

    Jacqueline Landess, MD, JD is a forensic psychiatrist at the Mendota Mental Health Institute in Madison, Wisconsin, as well as the associate training director of the forensic psychiatry fellowship at  the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Landess also is affiliated with Monarch Recovery Clinics, where she treats individuals with co-occuring addictions and psychiatric illness. She obtained her medical degree from Vanderbilt University and law degree from Indiana University. Dr. Landess then completed her general psychiatry training at Northwestern University followed by a year of child psychiatry fellowship then forensic psychiatry fellowship at the University of Colorado.  Before moving to Wisconsin, Dr. Landess worked at St. Louis University as an assistant professor of psychiatry and served as Director of Medical Student Education for the department of psychiatry. While in St. Louis, she also worked at the county jail as Chief of Mental Health Services and served as a consultant to the county's first felony mental health court.  Dr. Landess has presented and published on a range of topics related to psychiatry, medicine, and the law. Her research and academic interests center upon correctional psychiatry, child forensic psychiatry, constitutional law, civil commitment, ethics, continuing education of legal professionals regarding mental illness, and treatment of complex, co-occuring psychiatric disorders such as treatment-resistant mood or psychotic disorders complicated by substance use. 

    Dr. Landess is involved with a number of professional organizations, serving on committees within the Wisconsin Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, and serves as the co-chair of the Committee on Psychiatry and the Law within the Group for Advancement of Psychiatry (GAP). She is also a board member of Restoring Roots, a non-profit organization focused on long-term recovery housing and therapeutic communities for individuals with addiction.

    Leslie Hayes

    MD

    Leslie Hayes, MD, works for El Centro Family Health in Espanola, NM. She is board-certified in both addiction and family medicine. While Dr. Hayes enjoys all aspects of family medicine, her particular passion is taking care of people with opioid use disorder. She especially enjoys working with pregnant women and new mothers who have had drug problems and works hard to make sure that they and their babies receive compassionate and appropriate medical care. She got much of her training in substance use disorders through Project ECHO and now considers herself extremely fortunate to have been able to give back to Project ECHO, and she now provides training for other providers around the state of New Mexico and nationally in substance use disorder and use of buprenorphine. She recently started an ECHO in her own organization with the goal of getting 90% of providers trained to prescribe buprenorphine and provide compassionate, evidence-based care for Substance Use Disorder. She was named a White House Champion of Change in April of 2016 for her work with substance use disorder and pregnancy. Her work was also featured in The Providers, an award-winning documentary about rural health care.
