Overview

This 3-hour virtual-live course provides a deeper dive into implementing office-based treatment for opioid use disorder and addresses moving beyond common barriers that prevent DEA-waivered clinicians from successfully treating patients with OUD.

Moving Beyond the Barriers of Treating Opioid Use Disorder is case-based, interactive, virtual-live course that addresses moving beyond common barriers that prevent DEA-waivered clinicians from successfully treating patients with OUD. Common barriers related to implementing office-based treatment and patient care will be discussed, as well as how to address these barriers.

The target audience for this introductory and intermediate course includes: Healthcare providers who have not yet implemented their waiver or providers who face barriers to implementing their waiver.

This course addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care, Procedural Skills and Medical Knowledge.

Learning Objectives

  1. Recognize common barriers and challenges to implementing treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD)
  2. Apply evidence-based practices to overcome obstacles to treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD)
  3. Identify strategies to meet patient care needs with available resources to ensure continuity of care

Daniel Nauts

MD, FASAM

Dr. Nauts, MD, FASAM completed his undergraduate and medical education at the University of Michigan and joined an internal medicine group practice in Bellingham, Washington.  He left general internal medicine to develop his Addiction Medicine practice; since that time, he has been instrumental in the creation of 3 inpatient programs for those suffering with substance use and co-occurring disorders, outpatient SUD programs, and medication assisted treatment services.

Debra Newman

PA-C, MPAS, MPH

Debra R. Newman, PA-C, MSPAS, MPH served as the Medical Practitioner for Adult Drug and Mental Health Treatment Courts in Santa Fe County, New Mexico for the over six years, and currently provides training and technical assistance for the NM Department of Therapeutic Justice. She formerly served in this role for the Rio Arriba (NM) Adult Drug and Mental Health Treatment Courts, and the Santa Fe County DWI Court. Debra was a 2017-2018recipient of the PA Foundation/NIDA-CTN Mentored Outreach Award in Treatment Dissemination: “Utilizing Psychiatric PA’s in Drug/Treatment Courts.”

Her passion for addiction medicine began with her association with Project ECHO while employed at a large FQHC in northern NM more than 15 years ago, a region historically plagued with the highest per capita heroin overdose death rate in the nation. Debra worked as the only full-time provider for patients struggling with SUDs.

Debra is the only PA to serve as a Lead Mentor for the Provider Clinical Support System (PCSS and serves as a Co-Editor for ASAM Weekly.

In her current role with Encompass Community Services, a non-profit organization in Santa Cruz, CA that provides services in behavioral health and family andsocial well-being, she is Lead Provider for outpatient SUD services.

Marianne Fingerhood, DNP, ANP-BC

Marianne Fingerhood has been a nurse for over 35 years. Her career began at the bedside in Cardiac Critical Care and continued as a staff educator. She has been a nurse practitioner in adult primary care for more than 20 years and a clinical preceptor and nursing instructor for the past 19 years. In all settings, she has brought a passion for education, whether it be with patients, students, or colleagues. As a nurse practitioner with Johns Hopkins Community Physicians, she collaborates with other members of the health care team to promote excellence in prevention and management of chronic illness and patient education. Her areas of interest are safe opioid prescribing, identification and treatment of opioid use disorder, and the support and education of nurse practitioners as they transition into their roles as primary care providers. In July 2020, she received a grant from the Maryland Higher Education Commission to begin a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Fellowship.
