Overview
This 1-hour, on-demand session from the ASAM 53rd Annual Conference describes results from a mentoring pilot program for women addiction medicine researchers.
To increase participation of women, especial women of color, in full time SUD research careers, an extracurricular mentoring program (MP) was devevloped and implemented at a large state university for five women PhD students during Spring 2021. This MP included internal group meetings, guest speaker panels, readings, and written assignments. Additionally, mixed methods were implememted to evaluate the MP's impact on participant desire to seek a full time SUD research career, self-confidence in research, understanding of the research process, and awareness of the job application process. During this session, this MP's development, structure, evaluation, and lessons learned will be reviewed. This session is recommended for anyone considering development or improvement of a mentoring program, inside or outside of a university context.
The target audience for this Introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.
This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: System Based Practice.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Describe components of a model program used for mentoring women interested in a SUD research career, including approaches for evaluating the mentoring program.
- Formulate questions and answers for planning a mentoring program.
- Summarize the challenges and opportunities of developing and implementing a mentoring program, including resource needs.

Barbara (Basia) Andraka-Christou is an Assistant Professor at the University of Central Florida in the Department of Health Management and Informatics. She researches at the intersection of health policy, health services, and health informatics, specifically in the area of substance use disorder treatment. She has a J.D. and Ph.D. from Indiana University-Bloomington and is a licensed attorney in the state of Florida. To learn more about her research, please visit www.bandrakachristou.com.

PhD
Dr. Yara M. Asi is an Assistant Professor at the University of Central Florida in the School of Global Health Management and Informatics. Her research agenda focuses on global health, human rights, and development in fragile populations. She is a Non-resident Fellow at the Arab Center Washington DC, a 2020-2021 Fulbright US Scholar to the West Bank, and a Visiting Scholar at the FXB Center for Health & Human Rights at Harvard University. Along with working at one of the first accountable care organizations in the United States, she has also worked with Amnesty International USA and the Palestinian American Research Center on policy and outreach issues. She has presented at multiple national and international conferences on topics related to global health, food security, health informatics, and women in healthcare, and has published extensively on health and well-being in fragile and conflict-affected populations in journal articles and book chapters. Her work has also been featured in The Washington Post, The Guardian, The Nation, +972 Magazine, BBC, The Conversation, Al Jazeera, The World, and other outlets. Her forthcoming book with Johns Hopkins University Press will examine war as a public health crisis.
