Overview

This 1-hour on-demand session from ASAM Virtual 2021 addresses the rise of infectious diseases in parallel with the rise in opioid use disorder and the need to integrate infectious disease and OUD care.

Over the last decade, the rising opioid use disorder (OUD) epidemic has caused a parallel rise in infectious diseases (ID). Integration of ID care into OUD-specific settings may facilitate broader access to marginalized populations, but implementation is limited. This workshop will review the evidence behind integration of ID and OUD care, provide first person accounts from staff, and utilize small-group format to evaluate barriers and facilitators of integrated care across various practice settings. The workshop session will connect a virtual audience through a variety of presentation formats, to engage audience members of different educational backgrounds and learning styles. The goal of the workshop is to aid learners in applying integrated ID and OUD care concepts to their own practice settings.

The target audience for this intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care, Practice-Based Improvement, Interpersonal Skills, Systems Based Practice.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Define the evidence-base around integration of infectious disease and opioid use disorder care
  2. Describe real-world perspectives of care integration across the treatment landscape, from harm reduction to traditional OTP settings
  3. Define barriers and facilitators to care integration across a variety of practice settings

  2. Click "Complete Post Test" to answer quiz questions. You will have 10 attempts and must get at least 2 out of 3 questions correct. After completing the quiz, return to the Contents tab. 
  3. Click "Complete Evaluation" to answer evaluation questions. Scroll down on all questions, there are answers that expand past the size of the window. 
  4. Click the button “Claim Credits” in the box titled “Claim Credits & Certificate." Choose the type of credit and click submit. Click the button “View/Print Certificate” to save or print your certificate. If you ever lose your certificate, you can come back to the ASAM e-Learning Center and view it on your transcript (found in the Dashboard).

Sarah Kattakuzhy

MD

Sarah Kattakuzhy, MD graduated from Eastern Virginia Medical School before completing her Internal Medicine residency at George Washington University Hospital in Washington DC. After serving as Chief Medical Resident, Dr. Kattakuzhy joined the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease Laboratory of Immunoregulation, where she established her research career in the care of HIV and HCV, in particular the use of direct-acting-antivirals. In 2014, she transitioned to the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, where she continues to serve as Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases, and co-leads the Research Initiative on Infectious Disease in Substance Use Disorders. Dr. Kattakuzhy's research is focused on marginalized subpopulations of the HCV and HIV epidemics, in particular, people with opioid use disorder. Her work in the field of implementation science has been published in the Annals of Internal Medicine and Clinical Infectious Diseases. Dr. Kattakuzhy is a buprenorphine-waivered provider and is a strong proponent of medical education interventions to improve the care of individuals with substance use disorders. 

Aaron D. Greenblatt,

MD

Aaron David Greenblatt MD has been an assistant professor at University of Maryland School of Medicine since completing his fellowship in Addiction Medicine. He is medical director of the University of Maryland Addiction Treatment Programs at 1001 West Pratt Street, This provides an ideal base for treating patients with integrated medical, substance use disorder, infectious disease, and other behavioral health care, conducting research projects, and participating in the clinical education of medical students, psychiatry residents, and addiction fellows. Dr. Greenblatt also provides addiction treatment via telemedicine in rural Maryland, and has published and lectured on the topic. He fields consultation requests for MACS, a statewide warmline for clinical questions about addiction. He is also the director of the University of Maryland Addiction Medicine Fellowship.

David Sternberg

MHA

David Sternberg, MHA is the Clinical Services Manager at HIPS, a harm reduction organization and syringe service program in Washington, DC. David oversees the HIPS Infectious Disease Clinic, Medication-Assisted Treatment Clinic, Behavioral Health Clinic, and District-wide targeted HIV and HCV testing initiative. His interests include creative public health and historical nonfiction.

Elana S. Rosenthal

MD

Elana S. Rosenthal, MD is an infectious disease physician and assistant professor at the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She is co-director of the DC Partnership for HIV/AIDS Progress Clinical Research Program. Her research and clinical interests focus on the intersection of infectious diseases and substance use disorders.
