Overview

This 1-hour, on-demand session from the ASAM 53rd Annual Conference describes the current literature on HIV screening, diagnosis, and rapid start of antiretroviral therapy for persons who inject drugs.

In the United States, there are estimated 34,800 new HIV infections every year. Addiction medicine specialists play a central role in taking care of people who are at higher risk for HIV infections. This session provices a review of screening strategies to help providers appropriately conduct screening tests and interpret testing results in the practical setting. Initiating antiretroviral therapy (ART) in a timely manner improves patient outcomes. This session will also provide helpful resources to guide participants on how to initiate ART when diagnosing patients with HIV. At the completion of this session, participants will be able to apply HIV screening tests into clinical practice, interpret HIV diagnostic test results, and identify resources for starting ART after the diagnosis.

The target audience for this Introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

1. apply HIV screening tests into clinical practice
2. interpret HIV diagnostic test results
3. identify resources for starting ART immediately after the diagnosis of HIV

4. Click the button Claim Medical Credits in the box titled Claim Credits & Certificate. Choose the type of credit and click submit. Click the button View/Print Certificate to save or print your certificate. You can view/print your certificate at any time by visiting the ASAM eLearning Center, clicking Dashboard, and clicking Transcript/Achievements.

American Board of Pediatrics (ABP)
Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the activity, with individual assessments of the participant and feedback to the participant, enables the participant to earn a maximum of 1 MOC point in the American Board of Pediatrics’ (ABP) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABP MOC credit.

American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM)
