Overview

This 1-hour on-demand session from ASAM Virtual 2021 addresses the expansion of telemedicine in remote areas and the challenges and solutions experienced in serving remote veteran and American Indian patients with opioid use disorders.

 The epidemic of COVID-19 has brought many challenges to the evaluation and treatment of opioid use disorders and chronic pain syndrome. Rural communities have experienced an exacerbation of provider and pain treatment shortfalls, complicating the provision of services and maintaining engagement. Telemedicine expansion has provided opportunities and new challenges in the evaluation, treatment and documentation of opioid use disorder treatment. We will emphasize challenges and solutions experienced in serving remote veteran and American Indian patients with opioid use disorders. The strict adherence to the CDC 2016 Guidelines for Opioid Use in Chronic Pain has been associated with a 60% decrease in prescribed opioids yet the Veteran's Administration have observed increases in overdose deaths and suicides in patients who have had their opioids terminated.

The target audience for this intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care, Practice-Based Improvement, Interpersonal Skills, Systems Based Practice.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

1. To recognize clinical challenges in COVID related settings for diagnosis and treatment of Opioid Use Disorders (OUD)
2. To discuss the clinical challenges that COVID has brought to patients burdened with Opioid Use Disorders and the clinical staff providing services
3. To implement Medications used for Addiction Treatment (MAT) via telemedicine with the new rules of engagement

3. Click "Complete Evaluation" to answer evaluation questions. Scroll down on all questions, there are answers that expand past the size of the window. 
4. Click the button “Claim Credits” in the box titled “Claim Credits & Certificate." Choose the type of credit and click submit. Click the button “View/Print Certificate” to save or print your certificate. If you ever lose your certificate, you can come back to the ASAM e-Learning Center and view it on your transcript (found in the Dashboard).
