Overview

This 1-hour on-demand session from ASAM Virtual 2021 addresses reproductive issues among women patients with SUDs, unplanned pregnancies, and how to communicate with patients who are at risk for unplanned or poorly timed pregnancies.

Women with substance use disorders (SUDs) are more likely than women without SUDs to report unplanned or poorly timed pregnancies. Much prior work in family planning for women with SUDs assumes binary preferences, i.e. pregnancy or contraception. However, women’s thoughts on their reproductive plans lie on a continuum, and ambivalence is common.

Participants will learn to (a) elicit patient-driven reproductive goals among women with SUDs, (b) formulate plans that minimize the risks of “unplanned” pregnancies, and (c) prescribe emergency contraception. 

We will teach patient-centered reproductive counseling using the PATH framework. We will discuss pre-conception strategies for women with SUDs and practical tips for emergency contraception. Participants will practice communication skills and prenatal planning in small groups using communication drills and case-based discussion.

The target audience for this introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Medical Knowledge, Interpersonal Skills.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

1. Elicit patient-driven reproductive goals among women with SUDs
2. Formulate plans that minimize the risks of “unplanned” pregnancies
3. Prescribe emergency contraception

2. Click "Complete Post Test" to answer quiz questions. You will have 10 attempts and must get at least 2 out of 3 questions correct. After completing the quiz, return to the Contents tab. 
3. Click "Complete Evaluation" to answer evaluation questions. Scroll down on all questions, there are answers that expand past the size of the window. 
4. Click the button “Claim Credits” in the box titled “Claim Credits & Certificate." Choose the type of credit and click submit. Click the button “View/Print Certificate” to save or print your certificate. If you ever lose your certificate, you can come back to the ASAM e-Learning Center and view it on your transcript (found in the Dashboard).
