Overview

This 1-hour on-demand session from ASAM Virtual 2021 addresses the implantation and training model of a monetary and non-monetary contingency management program in primary care MAT programs as well as the barriers and solutions to success.

The purpose of this session is to share an implementation and training model of a monetary and non-monetary Contingency Management (CM) program that was implemented across 14 primary care Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) programs. Presenters will define and discuss contingency management and the related evidence for its use when treating patients with Opioid Use Disorder in primary care. Patient and practice cases will be utilized to discuss how it was designed to increase retention and shape patient recovery behaviors. Throughout the presentation, there will be focused discussion on interdisciplinary implementation, training, and the experienced barriers and solutions to program success. 

The target audience for this beginner level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.

This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Practice-Based Improvement.

  2. Click "Complete Post Test" to answer quiz questions. You will have 10 attempts and must get at least 2 out of 3 questions correct. After completing the quiz, return to the Contents tab. 
  3. Click Complete Evaluation to answer evaluation questions. Scroll down on all questions, there are answers that expand past the size of the window. Submit the evaluation (the next box should activate, and the evaluation box should turn green with a white check mark).
  4. Click the button “Claim Credits” in the box titled “Claim Credits & Certificate." Choose the type of credit and click submit. Click the button “View/Print Certificate” to save or print your certificate. If you ever lose your certificate, you can come back to the ASAM e-Learning Center and view it on your transcript (found in the Dashboard).

Angela L. Colistra

PhD, LPC, CAADC, CCS

Dr. Angela Colistra has been working with individuals managing co-occurring disorders, lending her expertise to therapy, medical training, clinical supervision, education, and research. She is the director of Behavioral Sciences and Associate Medical Director of Community and Practice-Based research for the Department of Family Medicine. She is a faculty with the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). A member of the Pennsylvania Advisory Council for Substance Use, offering guidance to the Governor of Pennsylvania and the Secretary of Drug and Alcohol Programs. Angie is the owner of Aligned Consulting and Coaching LLC where she provides addiction and BH consulting and coaching. Dr. Colistra is working on her first textbook: Equipping the Interdisciplinary Workforce to Treat Addiction and Behavioral Health: Reducing the Stigma with Springer due out in November of 2024. As a mother of two boys, she is dedicated to advancing addiction and behavioral health prevention and education; hailing from West Virginia this work is a personal and professional calling.

Sophia Harbove

MS, CTP

Sophia E. Harbove, MS, CTP, BHI Case Worker, Department of Family Medicine, Lehigh Valley Hospital Network

Sophia Harbove graduated from Cedar Crest College in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology. With an interest in learning more about substance use and the impact on mental health, she obtained a Certification in Chemical and Dependency Counseling from Northampton County Community College in 2006. In 2013, she graduated from Chestnut Hill College with a Masters of Science Degree in Clinical and Counseling Psychology. Mrs. Harbove has over 10 years’ experience in providing care to both youth and individuals who have experienced trauma and/or abuse. In that time she also provided protective parenting education and forensic treatment. Mrs. Harbove is currently in the process of obtaining credentialing for licensure in order to provide patient centered care as her way to give back to the community. A Lehigh Valley native, she resides in the rural area of Limeport with her husband, her Buff Orpington hens named after the Golden Girls, and her facetious Siamese cat, Monkey. 

Yamelisa J. Taveras

MA, CAADC, CCS

Yamelisa Taveras, M.A., CAADC, CCS is the CEO and Project Director of Counseling Solutions of the Lehigh Valley, a bilingual and bicultural recovery counseling center in Allentown PA. Yamelisa was born in Dominican Republic and  as a child moved to the United States with her family. She began as an ESL student in the 5th grade, and through hard work became an honor roll student, graduating in the top 5% of her class. She now holds a Masters Degree from Villanova University, a lifetime member of PsyChi Honor Society, and a PA Board Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor. With 14 years of experience in the field of substance use treatment, she has helped innumerable individuals through her dedication and passion to serve others. From prevention and early intervention for students k-12, to creating the Prevention 101 Kits, which provide essential information and safety items to individuals seeking recovery, she is a beacon in her community. She was recognized as a 2020 Bright Light honoree as part of PPL’s Bright Lights grant program, and this awarded the nonprofit organization she founded in 2019, The Unidos Foundation, a grant to continue her mission, where Yamelisa gives a voice to those silenced by oppression every day. Being diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at age 10, she was an advocate for Insulin insecure residents of her community during the State of the Union Address in 2020 as guest of Congresswoman Susan Wild. 

Yamelisa is a servant leader for her community and a dedicated mother for her 7 and 5 year olds, Daniel and Amelia, and her bonus children, Natalie and Matthew, whom she has the privilege to parent with her husband Manuel. 

Abby Letcher

MD, FASAM

Abby Letcher MD, FASAM is a Family Physician and Addiction Medicine Specialist in Allentown, PA. As an advocate for community responsive health systems, she was the founding Medical Director of the area's first Federally Qualified Health Center, developed integrated behavioral health and the first primary care program for medications for opioid use disorder, and community oriented Project ECHO for OUD. She partners with local community based organizations to promote Radical Welcome in healthcare, health equity and participatory system change.
