Clinical Considerations for Sexuality Issues in Substance Abuse Recovery

This 1-hour on-demand session from ASAM Virtual 2021 addresses the complex topic of sexual histories of individuals with SUD and provides an overview of the sexual health challenges these individuals may experience as well as suggestions for treatment.
Individuals with substance use disorders tend to have complicated sexual histories, that may include having sex while using substances, exchanging sexual behaviors for substances, or experiencing sexual dysfunction as a result of substance use, withdrawal, or recovery. Although mental health providers do an excellent job at assessing the global health of patients who use substances, the client's sexual health still tends to be missed in mental health treatment. This presentation provides mental health professionals with a brief overview of what sexual health challenges their clients with substance use disorders may experience, as well as suggestions for treatment.
The target audience for this introductory level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.
This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Interpersonal Skills.
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Identify the five Circles of Sexuality
- Identify at least 3 ways in which substance use/abuse impacts one's sexual health
- Describe the ways substance use/abuse intersects with sex work

Jenn DiBartolomeo, MA is a 5th-year graduate student at Widener University's Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology, an intern at the Center for Integrative Medicine, and a therapist at Emerge Wellness who specializes in LGBTQ+ mental health care and sexuality-related counseling. She received her Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Temple University and is currently a doctoral student in Clinical Psychology and Human Sexuality at Widener University, where she obtained her Master's degree in 2019. Jenn has experience working in a variety of mental health settings, including schools, psychiatric hospitals, residential eating disorder treatment facilities, and outpatient addiction treatments. Her feminist values lead to a socially-aware, integrative approach to therapy that considers not just the mental health of the person in front of her, but also the world that the person lives in. She also likes to integrate mindfulness and acceptance practices in therapy in order to help clients live in the present moment as opposed to ruminating on the past or worrying about the future.
Jenn works from a sex-positive, kink-positive, and poly-aware lens and welcomes discussion of these topics in therapy. In creating a safe and supportive therapeutic relationship, Jenn aims to help clients with challenges such as depression, anxiety, trauma, self-image, relationships, eating disorders, addictions, and many other topics. Jenn's current internship at the Center for Integrative Medicine over the last year and a half has increased her interest and experience with working with substance use disorders, especially utilizing integrative treatment and MAT.
