The ASAM Criteria Course will comprise of a comprehensive suite of competency-based learning activities in a live interactive webinar delivery format that meets the learning needs of the multiple audiences making use of the Criteria and results in the appropriate use of the Criteria in practice. This is a practical training designed to help beginner, intermediate, and advanced counselors, social workers, administrators, and other clinical staff develop patient-centered service plans and make objective decisions about patient admission, continuing care, and transfer/discharge for individuals with addictive, substance-related, and co-occurring conditions. The workshop content is based on information found in The ASAM Criteria: Treatment Criteria for Addictive, Substance-Related, and Co-Occurring Conditions, Third Edition and incorporates an opportunity for participants to practice applying the information through case-based activities. Learners will have the opportunity to aske the presenter questions in real time, participate in polling questions and break into small groups.
The ASAM Criteria Course can also serve as a bridge to the implementation of a provider credentialing program. Providers who have completed ASAM approved training on The ASAM Criteria can gain the initial skill set to deliver care in compliance with The ASAM Criteria.
- Describe the underlying principles and concepts of the ASAM Criteria.
- Identify the six dimensions of the ASAM Criteria’s multidimensional patient assessment.
- Determine treatment priorities based on risk assessment to guide treatment and service planning.
- Determine an appropriate level of care and treatment priorities based on risk assessment.
- Implement the ASAM Criteria, in the context of system challenges, for patients with addiction to ensure appropriate level of care and treatment outcomes.
Registration Deadline: There is no registration deadline. Learners may not register for the course after it has begun.
Christine R. Mulford
RN, MSN, FNP-BC
Christine brings her more than 15 years of clinical and leadership experience as a Nurse Practitioner to the practice of addiction medicine. She is passionate about individualized patient care as well as community education to end the stigma of substance use and mental health issues.
Together with her physician partner, she started the first Emergency Room based withdrawal management service in the greater Phoenix area. Additionally, she maintains a private addiction medicine practice in Scottsdale, Arizona. Christine received her Master’s Degree in Nursing from Vanderbilt University where she was the 1998 Julia Hereford Merit Scholar. She resides in Phoenix, Arizona with her 2 sometimes well-behaved dogs. She enjoys live music, sports, and trying new hot sauces.
PhD, LMSW, CAADC
Jennifer is a social worker, chemical addictions counselor, and an associate professor and the interim director for the School of Social Work at Western Michigan University. Jennifer’s clinical work focuses on integrated substance use, mental health, and physical health services for individuals with co-occurring needs. Her research interests and publication record include international social justice, co-occurring mental health, substance abuse, and medical needs among adults, implementation of evidence-based practices, and peer services in behavioral health.
Jennifer co-authored the book Tips and topics: Opening the toolbox for transforming services and systems with David Mee-Lee. She has presented on interprofessional research and teaching in the U.S and internationally, and served on multiple expert panels with SAMHSA. Jennifer is a co-principal investigator in two HRSA funded projects to impact the interprofessional behavioral health workforce. She has co-developed a digital application, Goal Scaling Solutions, for use in telehealth and education settings, to help people develop, monitor, and communicate about their goals for wellness and recovery.

Association of Social Work Boards ACE
The ASAM Criteria Course, Course #3225, is approved by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program to be offered by The American Society of Addiction Medicine as an individual course. Individual courses, not providers, are approved at the course level. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. ACE course approval period: 10/01/2020 - 10/01/2022. Social workers completing this course receive 8 Clinical Practice continuing education credits.

American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA)
This activity contributes to the CME component of the American Board of Anesthesiology’s redesigned Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology TM (MOCA®) program, known as MOCA 2.0®.
American Board of Pediatrics (ABP)

How to Claim Credits
To claim continuing education (CE) and/or continuing medical education (CME) credit, follow the steps below.
Complete the course.
Complete the post-course evaluation. Fill out the survey by clicking the blue "Fill out Survey" button. Be sure to scroll down on all Likert Scale questions. There are answers that expand past the size of the survey window. Submit the evaluation (the next box should activate, and the evaluation box should turn green with a white check mark).
Click the button “Claim Credits” in the box titled "Download Course Certificate." Choose the type of credit (Physician or Non-physician) and click submit. Click the button “View/Print Certificate” to save or print your certificate. If you ever lose your certificate, you can come back to the ASAM e-Learning Center and view it on your transcript (found in the Dashboard).
