Overview
This 1-hour on-demand session from ASAM Virtual 2021 addresses the updated ASAM Clinical Practice Guideline on Alcohol Withdrawal Management, providing an overview and a focus on their implementation.
This 1-hour focus session will provide an overview of the guidance for ambulatory management of alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) using the updated ASAM Clinical Practice Guideline on Alcohol Withdrawal Management, which was released last year. The 2nd half of the presentation will focus on implementation of the guidelines, including protocol development for escalation of pharmacotherapy and operationalization of ambulatory alcohol withdrawal management in underresourced settings. Specifically, it will include a detailed description of how ambulatory AWS management was operationalized in LA County for people experiencing homelessness in the era of COVID.
The target audience for this intermediate level session includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other clinicians, researchers, residents, fellows, students, and counselors.
This session addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care, Medical Knowledge.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Understand pharmacotherapy options for alcohol withdrawal management in the ambulatory setting
- Discuss a protocol describing when escalation from gabapentin or carbamazepine to benzodiazepines and/or phenobarbital is clinically appropriate for ambulatory alcohol withdrawal management
- Explain how medications for alcohol withdrawal syndrome can be operationalized for underresourced settings and offered to people experiencing homelessness in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic

All ASAM e-Learning Center refund requests must be made in writing to education@asam.org within 90 days of purchase. Those requesting refunds for courses that are in progress will receive partial refunds or e-Learning Center credit. Automatic full refunds will be made for any course with a live-course component that has been cancelled.

Anika Alvanzo
MD, MS, DFASAM, FACP
Anika Alvanzo, MD, MS, DFASAM, FACP is the Eastern Region Medical Director for Pyramid Healthcare, Inc. She also serves as a physician consultant on substance use disorders to the Behavioral Health Administration in the Maryland Department of Health and is the Managing Partner of Uzima Consulting Group, LLC, which provides addiction medicine-related consultation, education and training, and expert witness testimony. Dr. Alvanzo is a graduate of the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and holds a master’s degree in biostatistics from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine. Dr. Alvanzo is a Distinguished Fellow of ASAM, a Past President of the Maryland-DC Society of Addiction Medicine (MDDCSAM), and currently serves as Chair of the ASAM Annual Conference Program Planning Committee and Region V Director for the ASAM Board of Directors.
At Pyramid Healthcare, Inc., Dr. Alvanzo’s role is to optimize and standardize the medical care, with emphasis on substance withdrawal management and pharmacotherapy, in the residential and outpatient addiction treatment programs in Eastern Pennsylvania and Maryland. Prior to this, Dr. Alvanzo spent twelve years as faculty in the Divisions of General Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where she held a variety of clinical leadership roles, including Associate Medical Director of Addiction Treatment Services and the Center for Addiction and Pregnancy and Medical Director of the Broadway Center for Addiction, comprehensive, outpatient substance use disorder treatment (SUD) programs on the Johns Hopkin Bayview and Johns Hopkins Hospital campuses, respectively. From 2011 – 2018, Dr. Alvanzo directed the Substance Use Disorders Consultation Service, a multidisciplinary addiction consultation service serving the Johns Hopkins Hospital Department of Medicine general and subspecialty services.
Dr. Alvanzo has served as an expert on National Institutes of Health (NIH), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM), National Quality Forum (NQF) and PEW Research Center panels regarding opioids and integration of recovery-oriented care in various medical settings.

Brian Hurley
MD, MBA, DFASAM
Brian Hurley, MD, MBA, DFASAM is an addiction medicine physician and the Director of Addiction Medicine for the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. Brian is currently a Director at Large for the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and will assume the position of President-Elect this April 2021. He co-chairs the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services’ Substance Use Disorders Workgroup and the SafeMedLA Medications for Addiction Treatment Action Team, and is the Clinical Director of the Addiction Treatment Starts Here programs through the Center for Care Innovations, focused on increasing the delivery of Medications for Addiction Treatment in California’s community health centers. He is the PI of two MAT Access Points projects funded by the Sierra Health Foundation, a co-PI of a TRDRP funded smoking cessation implementation project, and a co-investigator on NIDA, NIAAA, and PCORI funded addiction related implementation science grants managed through RAND. He is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and regularly conducts motivational interviewing trainings throughout the United States. He is a Volunteer Assistant Clinical Professor of Addiction Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. He additionally serves on the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology’s Addiction Psychiatry examination writing committee.
Brian completed the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and was previously a UCLA - Veterans Administration National Quality Scholar at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. He completed a fellowship program in addiction psychiatry at New York University School of Medicine. He completed residency training at the Massachusetts General Hospital and McLean Hospital, where he was Chief Resident in Addiction Psychiatry. Brian is a former National President of the American Medical Student Association.
